Does anybody like Chaos and Disorder

I herd Chaos and Disorder once several years ago but never bought it. I finally bought a used copy cheap today since it's about the only official album i don't actually own. Although it showcases the rock side of prince nicely, it seems quite tuneless. I'm on song 6 and there isn't a single moment or song that's even been memorable, oh well, i'll listen to it all the way thru and put it on the shelf next to Come and Emanciation.

I really think P is a perfectionist and that he knows it was sub par which is why it has that bullshit "originally intended 4 private use..." disclaimer. If there is one record that is clearly a contractual obligation, it's this. Come on people, he practically says so in the disclaimer

i like the cd. pretty much the whole cd. i don't like the song with the bad reggae rap thing. i think that might be dig u better dead. i think chaos and disorder is an incredibly underrated prince record.

I think it's one of Prince's most underrated albums. It is certainly one of my favorites and rocks harder than any other Prince album he released in the 90's.

DUBD is by far my favorite track off of C&D. Other than that... I think I Like It There, I Rock Therefore I Am, and Into The Light are "okay"... the rest are just sort of "there" for me.

This album get's knocked a lot, but I have always liked it a lot.
It has a great flow to it, and it's instantly likable, like prince's other later short albums.
I think it kind of peters out at the end with Dig U Better Dead (some people like this because it's the only funky song on the album) & Had U, though.
It seems like the only rock album since Purple Rain.

I'm a big fan, I've been very vocal about liking and defending musicology. Just cause I have my own mind and opinion and don't like every thing prince puts out (the news) just cause it's prince, doesn't mean i'm not a fan. I swear, Prince could fart into a mic and burn a CD and you mindless fans would still by it and argue how brilliant it is

You have to be crazy!

Dig U Better Dead is one of the two horrible songs on this album. The other being the soundalike Eye Rock Therefore Eye Am.

disbelief

The rest are NOT tuneless.

What about Dinner With Delores?

The other rockin' songs rock, maaan!
"he don't want me to whoop his hero, Eric Clapton, but i'm a get in that azzz!!"

- Prince, "Glam Slam Boogie".

Like a lot of stuff released at that time, there are some great tracks on Chaos & Disorder as well
as some filler. Prince was more concerned with fulfilling his contract than creating 'proper' albums.

Such off the cuff bullshit. Explain Why?

Hmmm...

Grooves = Better than Average
Guitar = Rockin, One of his Best
Vocals = Average
Lyrics = Loose, Wity, Funny & Wild
Theme = (A bit whiny) but HIGH ENERGY
Band = Tommy, Sonny, Morris & Michael are an awesome back
Art = Direct and to the point, he's a bit unnerved
Special = Rosie Gaines & Steppa Ranks

I love love LOVE this album. I can even get into the two crappy songs at the end. I think his "contractual obligation" albums are going to be reevaluated one day and viewed as minor experimental masterpieces by the "mainstream" music critics.

I come at Prince from a soul/funk direction. From a Curtis/AG/JB perspective. And while I like “rock” music and I enjoy Prince’s guitar playing, I’m just not feeling Prince’s TGE, Chaos and Disorder hard guitar sound. When the guitar playing supplements the funk, and is just one of many instruments, and not the is leading force of the song, I think Prince excels. But when, as is the case with “Chaos and Disorder” and “TGE,” Prince is making guitar heavy hard rock tunes it sounds uninspired, tuneless…like the shell of an average garage band. I agree with you on the lyrics...not a bad record thinking of lyrics alone, much better than the musically superior TRC. “Dig You Better Dead” and “Had You” are the only two songs I like…”Dinner with Dolores” is aight but it’s Prince in “Musicology” mode recycling past energy/melodies and sounding uninspired as a result.

Give it some time. I hated it at first, thought it was really tacky and overproduced. And though it definitely is, those attibutes became kind of charming somewhere along the line. Definitely not in his top rank, but much more appealing (to me) than the synthetic "keeping up with the jones'" feeling of D&P, Emancipation or Rave.It's loose, silly and if you really think the title track or Same December is tuneless, then you probably won't ever warm up to the album.

It's my favourite of his 90s period. That doesn't mean it would be his best of course, by any means. But it has the "funny little album" charm that, say, Controversy or Around The World In A Day had. But nevertheless, this album alongside with its sister release The Gold Experience are artistically his most important releases of that decade. They define that "other" Prince sound, when it was still viewed as progression.

I think this album and Come are the most enjoyable records he's released since SOTT. They're short, filled with (mostly) good songs and unburdened by inane philosophizing, operatic concepts or pseudo-profundities.

C&D is loose, casual and fun - I wish more of his records were like this.
