Prince gospel album? I got a bit of responseregarding country music so what about a gospel album? And please don't tell me that he already made a gospel album called Lovesexy. I am talking about traditional gospel music. Heavy on piano and with lots of singing. I would love to hear an album where Prince could sing his ass off!

Well, maybe. It sure is religious. But would you call it gospel? I am referring to straight-outta-the-church gospel.

Prince wouldn't record a traditional gospel album because he is a Jehovah Witness, not a Christian. Jehovah Witnesses don't believe in singing songs to or about Jesus because they dont believe that Jesus is God.

Well, he could still record an album of gospel music coudn't he. All he would have to do is cange the lyrics. Didn't Ray Charles say the only difference between gospel and R & B is that you change Jesus to baby? I want to hear Prince sing!

The "I'll Do Anything" -project is the closest thing he has done to gospel purely music-wise. The lyrics might not be as religious as on his other projects, but it's got the vibe. Then of course there is "Everywhere".

Go and check "The Ladykillers", and imagine that the director of the choir is prince (which, by the way, appeared ina cohen's movie) "This one goes out to the one I love

Yeah,JWs dont believe in doing gospel songs. In RaveDVD Prince literally said that The Christ was not a gospel song b4 he sang it and if u saw the NAACP awards when the Gospel singers per4med P&M were the only ones not clapping or standing up.Its a big difference between Christians and Jehovah Witnesses. And like His promise is true

The Five Blind Boys Of Alabama did a cover of The Cross. It was very "Gospel". Pick it up if you get a chance. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Lovesexy & The Rainbow Children. Also, Adore from his 1987 masterpiece, Sign O The Times. Check me out and add me on:

Surely we are abusing the term gospel?
Its not a style of music, its a style of lyrics or words. The gospel according to Mark is just that. Not a song. Prince is right when he calls Lovesexy his gospel album. The "style" we mistake for gospel is most commonly know as christian worship music. .

. Yes it is. It is generally uptempo, has its own sound and is the precursor to soul music.

I feel you on that, I always wanted him to do a traditional gospel album. He worked with some of the best gospel singers, but he has never put one out of himself. That album would be the ultimate. You say heavy on the piano, but you also need the Hammond Organ that is the root of the gospel music.

I don't think that the Rainbow Children was gospel maybe christian or traditional hymns, but not gospel. I mean down home south gospel traditional music. Where you are people shouting and praising the Lord. Dancing for the Lord, crying soul searching. That's Traditional Gospel.

then, whats up with the christ ? Prince re-named "The Cross" "The Christ" because Jehovah Witnesses do not believe Jesus died on the cross, but rather a pole-like figure called a staros (which I think he wrote a song about if I'm not mistaken) and like jujubeans said, they don't believe Jesus is the Son of God, but just a "good man." ![]() Moving right along, I know Prince was interested in producing a gospel album for Patti LaBelle, but I don't know if that's still in the works or not. ![]() Even though he'll probably never do a gospel album, you can tell the man has been influenced by the genre a great bit (check "Adore" with the church-like organ, "Question of U" even has some gospel-like elements with the clapping and all, and even recent gems such as "On The Couch"). ![]()

This sounds more probable. As we all know, Prince has written MANY songs in gospel-like fashion. For example, "Adore" has so many gospel qualities, like call and response and gospel-organ. "Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife" is another great example. And there are so many others. "Call My Name" and "U Make My Sunshine" would be other examples, too. Yes, I think P could pull off a very good gospel album.
