The Sony Music promotion machine in Japan is working overtime for Musicology! Here’s a rundown of what’s been happening here.

The domestic Japanese edition of the CD was released May 19. It entered the daily Oricon chart at #5, which is quite good considering the import’s been available for a month. (It’s down to number 12 today.) There are no bonus tracks on the Japanese edition, and the case is very similar to the one available elsewhere, but there is a translation of the lyrics into Japanese in the booklet.

Sony Music Japan has a homepage in Japanese that lists media events. Several radio and TV stations have aired Prince specials, mostly featuring songs from the new album and past hits. (There have been no interviews or exclusive material that I know of.) There are also huge billboards in some major downtown areas.

What’s most interesting to fans around the world is that Prince did the opening narration for the top-rated music program “Hey Hey Hey Music Champ” (no lie, that’s the name) last Monday (5/17), and the same program will air an exclusive interview with Prince tomorrow night! I have posted a clip of the opening narration, which is quite hilarious considering that not only does he look so cool being digitally placed in a floating box on the screen, but the Japanese translation of what he says is obviously what the producers WISH he had been saying. (His words are, “Although I’m not with you in the flesh, I am in spirit.” The translation reads, “Everybody, let’s go as wild as we can!”)
