Excerpts from Prince interview with The Vegetarian Times, October 1997 by Catherine Censor Shemo

VT: How, when and why did you and Mayte become vegetarians?

The Artist: I've not eaten red meat for about 10 years now. Mayte for a lot longer. I've always had a preference for all things vegetarian but not until recently did I find out how good they were for you (in a physical sense).

VT: How far have you taken your vegetarianism?

The Artist: We don't eat anything with parents. Complete vegans--both of us!

VT: Many people become vegetarian out of concern for their health, but I know that's not what motivated you and Mayte. Can you tell us how your beliefs affected this decision?

The Artist: Thou shalt not kill means just that! We don't have to kill things to survive. In fact, the complete opposite happens: If you kill, you will die.

VT: That sounds pretty dire. Speaking of dire: Some people think vegetarianism is all about denying yourself pleasure. Have you found this to be true? You don't strike me as the kind of guy who thinks sensual pleasure is negative.

The Artist: Mayte and I get no pleasure from playing Russian roulette with food. Eating anything ridden with bacteria raises your chances for disease. Being sick is not pleasurable.

VT: I gather that Mayte was the driving force behind your interest in vegetarianism. Would you have gotten there without her influence?

The Artist: Mayte showed me how many different vegetarian dishes one could have and never miss the things you would imagine. I never was a big milk drinker anyway, but I really like vanilla soymilk. Being without my wife's influence is not a reality to me, so I don't speculate on life without her.

VT: What changes have the two of you noticed since becoming vegetarians?

The Artist: I actually enjoy eating more. I have more energy and most of all, my aura is stronger. One can actually feel one's karmic debt decrease with every meal. Mayte enjoys preparing meals for the two of us. It strengthens our bond.

VT: Your practical, as well as philosophical experience, is of interest to us. Now that you're eating vegetarian meals, are you learning to cook differently? Do you have a chef who cooks for you? Do you have a favorite style of cuisine or a favorite meal?

The Artist: Mayte cooks for us. She's always trying new things. The wonderful thing about veganism is there is no favorite dish because there's no addiction. Non-vegetarians always speak about their favorite food because it usually involves something artificial or something that doesn't belong in them. Ah, the universe keeps expanding!

Yes, but in "If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life," he sings: "U're gonna find out what I like in my eggs..."

Now, if I'm not mistaken, aren't eggs dairy? Just curious...

Also, I understand that Prince is an ice cream fanatic! I guess he don't eat it no more...LOL!

Ye you can get soy products that substitute milk, yogurts, icecream etc. I am vegetarian though not vegan ,though I like to try out different things as I love animals and hate to think that I'm doing anything to harm them,I actually bought some tesco's soya milk ,it was fowl like a mix between chalk and raw potato water. Anyway enough about me lol . I think its really good that Prince is raising awareness about these issues.

Can you expand on that, its just it seems sorta strange that he would think a certain way about ethics etc and then change though I suppose its possible.

i'm thinking that he's ovo-lacto vegetarian now - he did say in an interview recently that he doesn't eat meat (i think in response to someone asking him how he keeps so young-looking or something like that), but i've been hearing a few eggs references as well. being a vegan is really, really, really tough, particularly when you travel a lot and end up in places with few to no choices for your diet. being a vegetarian is no walk in the park in that regard either, but at least you can always find a place that'll fix you a grilled cheese or an omelette. neutral

Darla

On one of the recent radio interview that was broadcast here in L.A., he mentioned that he was on the Maker's Diet http://www.makers-diet.net/ . It's not vegetarian, they eat meat & dairy (organic of course).

I find it odd that he would stop eating meat and then restart,he seemed very clued up on why he'd stopped eating animal produce, the thing is organic or not the same animals are killed .I could never go back to eating meat and I'm sure the vast majority of vegan/vegetarians are he same ,when you come to the decision its seems very final.

Anxiety

i just read a story recently on a new term called "flexitarian" - it's a word for folks who have a largely vegetarian diet but will break down and have an occasional hamburger or whatever once in a while. who knows, maybe this is where he's gone with the whole thing - he hasn't been big into the whole veganism/animal rights thing over the past few years - i know a lot of people who have tried going veggie and couldn't do it. maybe the desire to keep up with it isn't so alluring to him anymore post-mayte.

I didn't eat meat or dairy for 6 years and I eat them all now VERY regularly. I eased back into them all with no problem at all. I still won't eat steak or hamburgers but I never liked them anyways.

Ye I've heard others say that they like certain brands,I must admit the carton I bought was very basic nothing added.I intend to give it another blast coz I suffer badly from hayfever during the summer and I read in numerous places that cutting out dairy during the peak season can help.

Yup, yup... I like Vanilla Soy Milk from Silk, and I rather like the one from 8th Continent, too. (I think that's the name of it). I have to admit that regular milk tends to taste a bit nasty to me now when someone slips it to me. heh
