Come, one of Prince's most overlooked and underrated album, don't you think??

It's one of his most overlooked albums; not many mention this album around here; it's one of his shortest albums, too, yet, I feel one of his better 90s output...It's actually an album that I didn't care much for in the beginning, but have really grown to love it over the years and one of those albums I play from beginning to end!! A lot of great tracks, in my opinion and a polished and tight album compared to his other 90s output! Any love for this album??

I just got done spinning this disk three times. I think and have always thought that Come is/was a mediocre album that seems better than it is when you compare it to bottom of the barrel records like Chaos and Disorder and NEWS. "Papa" "Dark" and "Come" are all top notch tracks. “Space” is a significant step down and then you got borderline crap like “Race” and “Pheromone” and “Solo.” Considering P’s low standards this is a decent record but, and I hate to say this and come off like I’m wishing for the past (really, I aint!), it’s just no on par with any of the 80’s material except perhaps “Batman.”

Well, it may be mediocre compared to his 80s stuff, but actually, a tight concept 90s album...very different from the album that came before it in the 90s, and the albums released after...

Not a big fan of Come. Letitgo is my jam, though.

Although I never liked the lyrics, I always thought that the song, "Come" was one of Prince's best produced tracks. Tight Production! The Hornheadz are Dangerous on this track!!! (if anyone ever finds an instrumental version, PLEEze let me know!!)

And, yeah, Letitgo, Space, and Dark are slammin!!

Wasn't it around the time the album was released that Prince changed his name?? That's why the cover of the CD was such...I remember it being a sad time for me as a Prince fan because it was around the time that he has started to alienate many of his fans including me...I stopped following his music for many years after that...

I'm trying to work out what you mean by this...I see low as the point where Bowie started making self-consciously "arty" records, deliberately moving away from pop. Actually, he probably started in that direction with Station to Station, but Low was where he really tried to incorporate the avante-garde into his sound. Are you saying that this was Prince's equivalent move? Or am I thinking too much about this. Just curious...

Anyway, I think Come is his best 90s album. I think it benefits greatly from it's relative brevity. Seven or eight pretty good songs that aren't diluted by a ton of filler. I just try to ignore solo and orgasm.

Freeze

Come was a decent album but one must remember that Prince was fueding with WB at the time and I think he was just spiting out albums to fulfill his contractual agreement with WB. I could be wrong but I believe he was bound to release X amount of albums and didnt really care what garbage came out. This is around the same time The Black album came out I think months apart and then soon afterwords the Hits Collection .... right there 5 albums if you count the Hits as 3 CDs as they 2 out of the 3 CDs were sold seperately. He was in a rush to break free of WB at this time.

I think your right, me personally, i think come really sucks compared to most other P albums. it's close to the bottom in my mind I'm not going to love it just cause it's him, "loose" is kinda cool", but it sounds like a bad industrial Nine inch nails style track

Come
Space
Dark
Letitgo

in my book thats more than 3 songs i like on the album so its a 2 out of 4 stars type thing. its not an absolute failure even though he just wasn't giving a fuck when he put it out. I find it more amusing than new power soul...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think that hits it on the head... Loose is the most derivative song on the album. I find this one hard to get through, like a bad keyboard demo track... But Come, the album, in general, is still one of the finest albums by Prince, IMO. Listenable with ease and fulfilling through the arrangements and performances.

I find it interesting that some would assume that he filled the album with "reject" or "crap" material "on purpose." I mean, a guy who has reworked countless songs for inclusion on countless projects, and you think that he would give up 8 or 9 and assume the listening public would "agree" with him that they are "crap?!" Give the man some credit. I highly doubt he releases, or rarely commits to tape, anything he isn't pleased with...

Just my 2 cents

You know, Come has turned out to be one of my fave albums. It's been on a sort of slow burn with me over the years. I really enjoyed it back in 94 but kind of thought of it as a toss-off, probably due to the whole feud/name change thing at the time. Ten years later, I think it's a beautiful album - odd description, yes, but I think it fits. The album has a very dark but sophisticated feel to it.

I don't believe for a second that Prince tossed crap together just to fulfill a contract. Prince was proud of this material, enough so to use it in the Glam Slam Ulysses dance project in the fall of 93. I also don't believe he 'weakened' the album totally on purpose. I prefer the retail release compared to the Test Press version that some rave about.

I think, the one thing different about this album compared to most from around that period (1991 - 1997) is that it doesn't seem to have any commercial aspirations about it. The music is quirky but catchy... It's, also, a very cohesive album but not overly burdened with concepts like prince or TGE. I think there's very little fluff on this album. Space, Pheromone, Loose!, Solo and Letitgo gets frequently played around here... Papa and the title track is good, too, but so da*n long. razz
Race is the only one I'm not really fond of... Dark is "ok" but still better than the ballads on Musicology. biggrin In a way, I sort of look at Come like the LoveSexy of the 90's, only it's inspiration is P's sexual side. It's best when you listen to it all the way through.

thumbs up!

I LOVE Race. It's one of my favorites.

I think the album's aged well. I always preferred the Beautiful Experience version of Come. Solo is a bit screechy - nice that he was trying something different, but I think he was taking the Cocteau Twins fixation a bit far though - he's no Liz Fraser eek

It's grown on me. Maybe if it had more tracks I would've loved the album overall, but as it is there's only 9 real songs there and I don't like them quite enough to enjoy the album a lot overall. I still like it though.

Papa, Loose!, Dark (but I've always liked So Dark better), and Pheromone I love, and Space, Solo, Letitgo and Come (this one just goes on too long) are pretty good-good to me.

Race just sucks. Really sucks. Really, really, sucks.

Ditto. Those are the ones I listen to also. I'm a really big fan of Letitgo.

But I think Prince most underrated album is:
Around the World In A Day
"So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

I bought this on vinyl quite recently (I'm trying to get all P's albums on vinyl) and I really rediscovered it didn't care for it at the time but some of the tracks are great

I love:-

Come
Pheremone
Loose
Papa
Race
Dark

I don't mind:-

Space
Letitgo

Solo and Orgasm are unmitigated shite though

Still a solid album

It's great. Orgasm is just embarrassing. Should've left those guitar shennanigans on the Controversy LP where they belong (and without the woman). Also not particularly keen on Loose.

Race is a fantastic tune. And i'll personally have a fist fight, outside, right now, with anyone who says otherwise. boxing

I liked "Come" from the first listen and I still enjoy it now.
IMO best songs are the title-track, "Space" and "Letitgo" but also the others are great....
apart from "Orgasm" (embarassing is the right word as TheFrog wrote before) and "Solo" which is not that bad but simply not my kind of song.
I like also the original acetate version with "Interactive", "Endorphinemachine" and "Strays Of The World" instead of "Come" and "Letitgo", but I strongly prefer the released version.
