I was 8! I was at a family friends house in Luton and I sae the Parade concert on TV and couldn't take my eyes off him!

When I was 12 my sister went to the LOVESEXY concert in Wembley. She made me watch it when it came on TV - I completely fell in love. I knew then that he would have a big impact on my life!

lol The first time I saw Prince, I had just moved back to New York after living with my grandmother in Mississippi (of all places) for two years. I was 12 years old and heard the song "I wanna be your lover." OMG! I didn't know exactly who it was but when I went into the wrecka stoe the next day, I saw him on the cover with his permed hair and bare chest. At 12 years old, this was really kinda sexy to me. My family freaked when I bought the record home (yeah youngsters, we had really big CD's back then, lol). My mother said he would never last, my father called him a fag, and my brother just sucked his teeth. Then I saw him on American Bandstand. He was electric when he moved but crazy shy when confronted. I thought that was a sign of genius. So, I've been one of the fam for almost 26 years now and still going strong.

the very 1st time you saw Prince what was your reaction? i remember i think it was in 1980 i turned on a pay cable channel called Spectrum they had a Prince concert and i was like 11 years old at the time and couldnt beleieve my eyes i thought he was so outragous and who knew i would become a big fan of his a few years later and continue into 2004 smile

we must be around the same age.

i remember seeing a picture in time magazine international, a review of "dirty mind."

rather fascinating to see, at that age, a man deliberately hopping around in his underwear, in public. at the age of 11, it's just about the most embarassing thing imaginable. lol

I remember in 1976 I was about 8 or 9 I saw him in Music City here in Mpls downtown, down the street from 1st Ave. He was looking through some albums and yes I said albums. My sister noticed him and said to me theres Prince and I was like no it isn't. So she bet a 1.00 that is was him and I went up to him and asked him if it was him and he said yes. Then I turned around to try to get some paper for an autograph and when I looked back he disappeared out the door, and was gone. The next time I saw him was at the Phylis Wheatley for Juneteenth.

For the majority of my life I either have had an encounter with him or I have seen him around town. He makes himself visiable.

The first time I saw Prince was in 1984 at the Drive in theatre to see Purple Rain. It blew my mind! I had heard of this guy called Prince, but don't think I had ever seen him. I was mesmerized. I knew he was someone special and I went and bought all albums that were out at that time. He had something no one else did and IMO he still does.

I heard Prince before I actually saw him, around '78, the radio was playing "Soft and Wet" but I always thought it was a girl, or a girl group. I remember the girls at my school talked about this guy named Prince , but I never saw who they were talking about until '79 when the album "Prince" came out... and I immediately had problems with his appearance. Dude's sportin' a Farah Fawcett hairdo on the front cover, and naked on a horse on the back. I laughed my ass off, thinkin' "man, "he" has issues!! the next year, the song "Uptown" hit the radio, and I was like, Yeah, Now that's cool! But then the Dirty Mind album came out...and that cover scared the Hell Outta me! especially the back... I backed away slowly, like "I don't know... this cat is out there!"...but by the next year, when I heard "Let's Work", and "Sexuality", I finally said "OK, AT this point, F**K it! I don't care if dude shows up naked with balloons on his head! I'm A Fan!!"

Paligap's is very similar to my experience. The first song I heard from P was "Soft and Wet" and I too thought it was a girl singing. Then when "I Wanna Be Your Lover" came out, I liked that song a lot, but didn't connect it with "Soft and Wet". I went and bought the 45 of "I Wanna Be Your Lover" but it didn't have a picture on the sleeve. A little later, my girl cousin had the Prince album and I saw him then. He reminded me of a black Leif Garret and on the back picture on the pegusus, he looked strange, but in a uncool way. I loved the Prince album, though. Bambi and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad was the shit to me. When I finally saw Prince doing something was on "American Bandstand". I thought he acted weird and again, not in a cool way. I was kind of put off. Loved his music though. When "Uptown" came out, I dug that as well. It reminded me alot of "Miss You" by the Stones. But again, when I saw the album to Dirty Mind and what he had on, I wasn't cool with it. I was almost 11 then. It was when P released the single "Controversy" that I was floored. I truly loved that song. I wore that single out! To this day, that song is in my top 3 all-time fave songs by him. And it was when I saw the video of Controversy, that was the first time I thought P looked cool. The band looked real cool, them playing in a church with the angel statues on each side of the stage. Yeah, that was one of the coolest things I had ever seen, and I grew up going to concerts. Kiss, Parliament, I had seen them all. But I thought this was the shit. So on that tour, I went to go see him.

I put his Controversy Poster on my Bedroom Wall. I made a Collage of Images from various magazines and put That on my wall. I talked about him in School and wrote his name on my Looseleaf Binder. This girl I knew painted her nails Yellow with black polka dots she had a Rude Boy button. We used to talk about how Sexy he was.I wore Velvet Blazers with Ruffles and wore my hair to the side and dyed my bangs purple. I wore fingerless gloves. I did Wild Things to his Music.....I Celebrated his birthday with a Party and Special food. We went to Record Conventions and scooped up Everything with his Image on it. I called up the radio Stations begging them to play Prince saying..It's my Birthday today... Please we were Freaks! Still Am..Ha!

Yes, he was trying to get himself out there plus I knew some of his family members and Mrs Anderson through my Grandmother. Being that Mpls didn't have a big black community, everybody knew everybody. My Grandmother has been here since the 40's.

When I was a kid my two favorite songs on the radio in late 79 and early 80 were I Wanna Be your Lover and Haven't You Heard by Patrice Rushen. The DJ always seemed to play those songs back to back. I had no idea what Prince looked like until I saw a poster in my older cousins' room. Then I saw a picture of him in Jet Magazine french kissing his Keyboardist Gayle Chapman. At 10 years old I was mezmerised. Totally hooked afer I saw him on American Bandstand. "Prince" was the first album I bought with my allowance. Bambi confused me though.

The first time I saw him was on a tv retransmission of LoveSexey tour, he was performing in germany. I remember it was summertime and I was 11/12 years old and I felt eclipsed and very surprised of what I was seeing. In my family music is very important and I've grown listening to music everytime, but at that time I realize I had never heard nothing like that and now I am convinced that I'll never will. But, the most important experience in my life was two years ago in the Ahoy Stadium, Rotterdam: I traveled from Barcelona to see him. When he came into the stage for the sound test... I can describe what I felt! wow! he is so kind! So nice! So everything! So Prince!.

See, when I was little and I saw Prince, I also saw the very introducton the concept of music. Prince was music to me as a child. When I thought of music, I thought of Prince. big grin

I was just a baby when Purple Rain came out. See, there were 2 big stars that loved: Prince & Michael Jackson. And I believe that was back when there were huge debates over which one was better. I mean, at that point MJ was bigger than Jesus with his best-selling album. giggle But Prince came back strong with Purple Rain, and so you know who won that battle. wink

Anyways, I can't really say an exact first time that I saw Prince. I feel like I was born into the religion of worshipping Prince. My mother always had his music playing because she loved him as much as I did. I would be giddy whenever I eard him play. "Purple Rain" alone was enough to get me amped into his music. But his image was just as great to me.

He made me, as a Black man, truly proud of him. He was like the successor to Hendrix or Hazel or somebody. My infant eyes could not turn away from his music videos like "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy". To me this was MUSIC!!! This was the future of music. As I listened to the grooves, I didn't hear Prince just sing the song, he was telling me "this is where it's at". guitar

Also, I have to give my mother some credit for introducing me to the crazy sounds of Prince. She was very instrumental in doing that. When you're a kid, of course you're gonna pick up on what your parents are into. And so my mother was into the pop music of that time. Prince was her favorite, but she also into MJ, Madonna, Billy Idol, Huey Lewis & the News, Hall & Oates, Def Leppard, Cyndi Lauper, and of course all them New Wave stars like Duran, Culture Club, Wham!, and so forth (now you see where I got my schtick from wink). I'm glad it was then, and not now, because the pop music of today SUCKS big time. Back then, people knew how to write songs and play instruments and become pop stars in the process.

So, I can't say when exactly I saw him, but whenever I did see him, I was just starstruck. love
Prince will alway be my musical hero and idol, through the good times and the bad. smile

The first time I saw Prince was the first time I saw Purple Rain. I was in a second-hand shop one day and they were selling boxes full of music stuff (albums, cassettes, concert-videos, etc.) for $5 and I figured what the hell, it could be fun. I brought the box home, put the tape in, mostly because the cover was slightly intriguing, and that was it! I saw that beautiful, sexually energized man playing that guitar and that was it! I started to moan uncontrollably, had to take a moment to compose myself, and rewound the movie to catch what I missed while I was moaning, finished watching it, and then stole the soundtrack from my mom. biggrin It was great! biggrin
Strange, but I'm more comfortable around you naked.

My first solid recollection of him would be the "Cream" -video at 11 or something - and that must seriously have been because of the women in lingerie. No wait... wait a minute... Prince was responsible for my sexual awakening too?!? eek

My first time was when I a week after my older bro got me hooked on Prince by playing me Diamonds & Pearls. The next week I went round to his flat with the precise intention of listening to Prince. It just so happened that my bro had made a mix up CD of Emancipation and Gold-era Tracks. The songs I heard were Joint to Joint followed by P Control - man they were funky (I was 7, this music rocked me and all my friends of course lapped it up cause it's a huge step from S Club 7 to Prince, and damn the music's good when you hear it for the first time). Anyway, he then lent me the Hits video, which I watched religiously and I couldn't understand how he kept changing his look .

when i was about 15 yrs old, one night prince was playing in brussels (i didnt go, wasnt a fan at the time). This is like '95 i think. So its friday night and im hanging out at an r&b club in the city, and all of a sudden this buzz goes around that prince is here. So about two minutes later he arrives, with bodyguards and lots of ppl. I was standing in the hallway and he walks right by me and all i could think about was how incredibly 'petite' he was. we were actually laughing at him that night (shame shame - i wasnt into his music back then). He didnt play at the club, he just went to a private vip party upstairs.
