New Power Soul--Opinions

So, I keep hearing about how much people seem to hate NPS. I personally don't find a problem with it. Maybe its just because I like his uptempo songs a lot more than the slow jams, but I would still like to know, WHY DO A LOT OF PEOPLE HATE NPS?

1) Doug E. Fresh. I mean, I liked this guy back in the '80s when he was with Slick Rick, but give me a break. If you didn't like Scrap D on Mr. Happy or I Rock Therefore I Am, try listening to this Doug. You'll proclaim Scrap rapper of the century.

2) The album is lyrically boring all the way through until Wasted Kisses.

3) While it uses the NPG Hornz (which I like), it musically rehashes portions of Exodus (see Big Fun) and is too "Kirky J" sounding. It also lacks any good guitar or live drumming.

I'm glad this has been brought up because I think the record is usually treated unduly harsh.

I've always found NPS quite pleasant actually. I'll agree that it furthers no boundaries at all for Prince (hence the album not being by 'prince'?) but it is an easy-going fun record. Notable mentions include Mad Sex (fun and funky), Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses.

I accept most of the criticisms of this album to some extent but still find it a nice listen to now or then. Perhaps why people hate this album so much is not because it's really really crap, but because Prince is clearly capable of so much more as TRC or One Nite Alone tracks demonstrate.

I agree.. Prince doesn't know much about rap!.. because it seems like he gets the "old fossils" to rap on his stuff..

or rappers tha just plain suck..

* I feel about most of his albums SINCE Prince took over his career you can say this:

"It was Promoted wring..He picked the wrong song for the first single"

sad

I like all the albums though

And Exodus was much better.

I enjoyed NewPowerSoul. Maybe not his greatest, but definitely deserves more due than it got.
The One was exquisite Prince - new sound that few others would come up with (oh that bass!). Wasted Kisses is the JAM! One of the best cuts.

Newpower Soul is okay. I liked it when I bought it in 98, but the album is flat. The drum programming is weak, most of the lyrics are inane, and these are more throwaway songs than anything else. Still, parts of it are enjoyable (Love Somebody, Mad Sex, The One, Come On, Freaks) but it's still not a good album. Rave is a better album than NPS, but then again, TRC is better than both of them.

Whenever someone says they like a Prince song..because "it has a good beat to it"...that alone is reason enough to hate it. smile

there was a time that I thought I must be crazy, because not only do enjoy New Power Soul, I also love Chaos and Disorder. They are the two most beat up P albums ever! To me, Chaos and Disorder is a nice little guitar driven emotional romp, and New Power Soul is just funky! I've heard the arguments again and again dogging this album, but I've gotta say, IMHO, I don't buy them. Oh, and by the way, I think NPS eats Rave for lunch. smile

NPS sux!
it sounds like minimum effort went in2 making it. just because prince is capable of putting 2gether mediocore r'n'b flavoured songs in his sleep, doesn't mean he should.

i found it 2 b a disapointment because i know he is so much better than that.
