Musicology Review

This is a review of the Musicology CD
Page E3, Saturday May 8, 2004, Edmonton Journal, write up by: Sandra Sperounes, Edmonton Journal.

(word for word)

CD: Musicology
Artist: Prince
Label: Columbia
Rating: ****
Review: Don't call it a comeback. Those who saw Prince's heart-stopping show at the Jubilee Auditorium in 2002 know the Purple One was in top form as a performer well before his appearance at this year's Grammys supposedly resuscitated his career. Yet, despite his regular tours, he just wasn't able to translate the intensity and flamboyancy of his stage jams to disc until Musicology. His two previous store-released efforts were largely unsatisfying-- 1999's Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic came off cold while 2001's The Rainbow Children was a freaky, jazz-style concept record about faith and equality. Musicology, on the other hand, is a delicious, sweaty, multi-layered explosion of funk and sensual R&B ditties. "Love Jones is on the TV again, baby/I wanna go down south, yeah" he suggestively coos in the intro of On The Couch. "I Can't stop writing songs about U," he sings on Call My Name. "I love U so much/I just can't wait 2 get my arms around U." He's singing about his new wife, Canadian Manuela Testolini, who might be one of the reasons behind the cohesiveness of Musicology. So could his move from Minneapolis to Toronto, where he ended up recording his new album. (He's even said Musicology has a "unique sound") While Prince focuses most of his attention on love 'n' sex, he also makes fun of himself and Michael Jackson on Life 'O' The Party and addresses political issues on Cinnamon Girl, a rockin' number with '80's overtones and a hopeful message of peace and racial harmony. It might well be his best track since Raspberry Beret and Sign 'O' The Times.

lol Canadians are giving themselves credit for the success of the album. I guess it was only a question of time. lol

I've said it 1000 times that reviews are subjective but looky looky here. This critic loves Cinnamon Girl. I like CG personally but i think that the critics who don't like the song, can't deal with the anti-war lyrics. It's a damn good soft rock/pop song! I just love diversity!
