Lovesexy may be the definitive Prince album. Over the years, I don't know of another Prince album that is as consistently mentioned by hardcore Prince fans as an essential album. For the casual fan it's always PR, 1999 or SOTT.....but for us, Lovesexy always seems to be thought of in high regard. I think Lovesexy is the culmination of everything that Prince has done over the years that makes him Prince - the musical experimentation, the discussions of God and sex, the messages of peace and positivity - all done without regard to public opinion, industry trends or record sells.

eleven said: EVERYTHING about this album AND era is magic for me. I was just graduating form High School and about to embark on my own "rebirth", the one where you go from an adolescent to an adult. This transition for me was almost scarily paralleled by Prince's music... for me, Lovesexy was the last time Prince would be seen (by me) as a mythological figure; a super-human so gifted and SO awe-inspiring that my obsession with him and his music was beginning to scare those around me (and myself to some degree, looking back on it). The Lovesexy era also marks the first time I ever saw him live, and lets just say any Love I had built up for him at that point became an indescribable burst of Euphoria...IT WAS like a drug, and I was hands-down a junkie!
After Lovesexy, my hero slowly became more human (see Batman, Graffiti Bridge, etc...), just as I was slowly becoming an adult. It was kinda like being told that there's no such thing as Santa Claus. I say this because I really have never gotten the same high from an album of his ever since. Now, that's not to say I still don't enjoy his music immensely, I DO, but Lovesexy, for me, was the last time He lived on Mount Olympus- and it was almost necessary for him to "come down from the mountain" a little after '88 because, for my own mental health, if he had continued being that level of wickedly insanely creative, I probably would have started "the church of Prince" in his honor! The colors (teal blue & fuscia), the album cover, the clothes (MY GOD-- the CLOTHES!!!!) the concerts, the spirituality...feeling you get when you fall in Love... and more than anything- the MUSIC was all the biggest, most beautiful Mind F**K I have ever experienced. THANK YOU PRINCE for LOVESEXY!!! and for ending my teenage years on such a high. [b]Wow, eleven! It's 8:30 in the morning and you brought tears to my eyes. I was in college at the time, but I had been increasingly interested in Prince since Controversy. Virtually every album was terrific, every single song. And the B-Sides too. But then, Lovesexy. Oh my God. The intricate musicianship and joyful vocals. It overwhelmed me, and pulled me out of doldrums - dancing and singing. I've seen him live only once, in Atlanta on the Lovesexy tour. It also was the complete package, and mindblowing. My buddy and I drove down from South Carolina in our cut-off blue jeans and t-shirts. It seems that everyone else in Atlanta were dressed 2 the 9s. When Prince, Cat, and Shelia E. got out of the backseat of that white Thunderbird and started grinding onstage, we pulled-out our herb to get in the mood. Nobody around us, nobody, wanted a toke. Later in the show, when Prince sang "you don't need experience..." he mimed holding a joint to his lips, then threw it on the ground. I'd never thought about the lyric that way... My dad bought me the tape. I think i listened to it once and then i put it away. I was not a fan then. I became a fan with "Gett Off". Since then i have bought it twice. I really love that album although i don't think Alphabet Street was the proper choice for first single

Let's hope she gets children very soon !!!!! She already has. The Rainbow Children. I've got very fond memories of this album too, only I didn't discover it until 1999 go figure. I remember being ashamed to buy the cd because of the cover, but reminded myself that it didn't matter. I knew it would be a great experience after I had just recently gotten into Parade. Some of my best memories are lying around my apartment in front of the fan listening to Lovesexy and sketching some new ideas for paintings. I must admit that no other Prince album compares in terms of taking you to a better place.

The clean minimal art direction of the album, with its pink cursive text, white space, little logos, and the transparent sleeves with little sticker logo labels for all the singles, and its retro videotape look for the clip for alphabet street was in such contrast to SOTT or the BLack Album, and all the other stuff at that time... like a clean spring breeze from the future. So out off touch with what was around it in pop music, making it such a big step in the summer of '88 My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

It's worth pointing out how long this album took for people to get into it. I was a pretty big fan in high school, but got a little out of touch with Sign o' the Times and wasn't exactly drawn back in by Lovesexy's brazen cover, and Alphabet Street sounded very weird to me at the time. I'm sure I would have gotten into it given the chance, but fact is I didn't until 1995 or so. Oddly enough, after I finally really started liking P's ballads.
I remember being on the Prince discussion digest then. And in the FAQ it actually said "Is Lovesexy any good?" And the moderator said, "Some fans love it, some feel like I do: that it never should have happened." Paraphrasing somewhat, but you get the idea. Wonder if he's changed his tune about it. I have! It was obvious P was in touch with something. I could see a new freedom that he had tapped into. Being a brother that has always wore his hair long, I was happy to see Prince wearing his the way he did. Next to "When Doves Cry" video, "Glam Slam" video is tight. The album, well, I wasn't shocked by the album cover. That's pure Prince. The songs, Glam Slam, Positivity, Anna Stesia and Lovesexy I thought were killer glam funk. Saw Prince twice on this tour, back to back at the Sports Arena in LA. Had the polk a dot shirt on too. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
