PRINCE - THE ORACLE

Working in a record store we get acces 2 a lot of stuff, in-store industry mags being one of these things. Found this in our suppliers weekly magazine 'The Oracle', week commencing 10.05.04 (I'm sure this is probably from some other big name magazine article, but Im posting this here just in case it isn't!)

PRINCE SPEAKS SHOCKER!
He's hardly said boo to a goose for the best side of ten years, so it's always worth reporting those rare occasions when Prince actually decides to talk.

The reclusive star has been releasing records on his own NPG label via the web since becoming disillusioned with major labels in 1996, but having announced a greatest hits tour of the States, the purple pixie is now keen to get his new material heard on a wider scale and released the critically acclaimed 'Musicology' with help from Sony. However, it's prince's new surroundings which inspired his commerical comeback the most.

"Musicology is the first record I've recorded in Toronto and I can really feel the difference. It has a completely unique sound that came from a total disregard for what's happening in American music, and for the workings of the American music industry. It doesn't sound like anything else that's out there right now," Prince told www.canoe.ca

Having recently embarked on a major greatest hits tour stateside, his first in many a year, it sounds like resting classic hits like Purple Rain and Kiss over the last decade has done him the world of good.

"It's me - I'm just doing what I always do and what I love to do. But someone has to do this, because no one else is. The music is such a treasure, so celebratory and joyous, and no one's doing it anymore - im happy to keep it going"
Musicology is out now on Sony/NPG

"Don't U miss the feeling music gave ya back in tha day?" asks Prince on the title cut of his latest CD. Happily, His Purple Majesty does -- and better still, he's decided to address the situation.

Musicology, his umpteenth album and first major-label effort since 2001's Rainbow Children, is the comeback disc we've all been waiting years to hear. Concise, clear and confident, these dozen cuts are a welcome return to the old-school R&B, sensual soul, funk-rock and paisley-pop of Prince's glory days.

Hooks and choruses come fast and furious on tracks like Life 'O' the Party, Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance and Cinnamon Girl (no, not that Cinnamon Girl), ( confuse ~ 'nana) with the self-indulgent noodling restricted to a few numbers that allow Prince to showcase his versatility and virtuosity without diluting the disc's impact.

No, it's not gonna replace 1999 or Purple Rain. But one spin of Musicology is all it takes to know that Prince is back. And it's about freaking time.

Track Listing:
1. Musicology
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance
3. A Million Days
4. Life 'O' The Party
5. Call My Name
6. Cinnamon Girl
7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
8. The Marrying Kind
9. If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life
10. On The Couch
11. Dear Mr. Man
12. Reflection

He's saying it's not a cover of Neil Young's song.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Um, that's because it sounds like something made in the 1970's... when James Brown, Sly and ther others were funking ...

And he's lying about making this album with a total disregard for what's happening in American music ... he's namechecking current artists, doing Beyonce's booty shake at concerts, and singing "I like the way you move." ...

OK, I know all that is after the album production... but album itself certainly doesn't sound unique enough to have been created in a vacuum ... so there's no need for him to put down American music and try to build himself up while putting others down (a recurring theme with him)

PLEASE let this be a misquote. That damn fool did NOT just say no one else is doing the music they want to do, did he? WTF? Dis nig** must be on DRUGS! I thought MJ was out of touch, but DAYUM! Now if somebody up and said the only reason he's talking shit is because he's coasting on his old rep and hasn't been relevant for years, I wonder how he'd react?
