You said a mouth full! I don't know why our people are like that. I always catch a bunch of flak because I like not only Prince, but also Sting, Seal,Devo, Tenaceous D, Areosmith, and a host of others that blacks deem unacceptable for me to be into.
I HATE THAT SHIT!!!!

In my experience, blacks [I am a black woman] for some reason think that P is biracial or something but they STILL consider him black. Even if they think he's weird or effeminate, I think that by and large, black people are his most loyal fans. This is MY opinion, but I think that the white mainstream hasn't been as forgiving as the black audience. Example: the name change. Whites made a lot of fun of Prince because of that. Or, they wanted to hear Purple Rain, 1999 and Little Red Corvette, but didn't want to hear Adore or If I Was Your Girlfriend! This is MY opinion. In an interview with Tavis Smiley back around the New Power Soul album, Tavis asked P about the whole name thing. P responded that "people of color will always call me Prince." Blacks didn't seem to make a big deal out of it. They just called him Prince. Even Whitney Houston said that she'll call him Prince no matter what.

All in all, when I go to a Prince concert [even in Washington, D.C. or Atlanta] I am always amazed at how racially diverse they are. Whites, blacks, Puerto Ricans, people all of races/ethnicities/nationalities/classes coming together to see the Little Man at work.

[Before you flame me, I'm speaking from my own experiences with white and black fans. Of course I'm not saying that all blacks are this way or all whites or that way...just MY experience]

That is crazy. I will never be able to understand how anyone would think Prince is other than Black. He doesn't even look mixed(black/white).

No I wasnt talkin about him lookin white but some blacks think that his music isnt black enough...

Perhaps it depends on where you're from. I grew up in Atlanta and Prince is HUGE there. I now live in the D.C. area and Prince has a very loyal and large fan base here. I find that strange that people think he's too white because some of his most popular songs are R&B/Funk/Gospel based. Examples: Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Shhh, How Come U..., When Doves Cry, Kiss, Scandalous, etc. all are HUGE draws for black P fans. I understand that some blacks might not be too turned on by the rock music, but that's why I think it's important that P recapture the attention of the black audience by releasing "Call My Name" on black radio while simultaneously releasing a rock/pop song on mainstream radio. There's nothing wrong with that. Black people will always remain loyal to black artists [MJ, R. Kelly, etc.] no matter what. That goes for P as well. I also think most black people appreciate the fact that P is one of only a handfull of black male artists that has never been in trouble with the law. My understanding is that the black community is quite proud of P and his accomplishments even though he might not be as big now as Usher. All I have to say is: check our your latest Jet and Billboard charts...he's right up there and "Musicology" is not played on black urban radio stations! That's an amazing feat and we should be proud of P's accomplishments. It ain't over!

This thread. neutral Alright then here's my black person testimony. I'm black, I like Prince. I know quite a few black people who also like Prince. I know quite a few who don't like Prince. I know quite a few who like some of his music, but not all of it. Some like his rock stuff, others don't.

From this I have deduced that some black people like Prince, while others don't.

Hope that was helpful.

Ummm...I've never heard this. And I've been Black for over 30 years. I have NEVER heard ANY Black people refer to Prince as "white artist." In fact, they usually refer to him as "that wild little brotha."

I didn't wanna say it, but since you said it I'll back you. It ALL originates in Africa baby...Bebop, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Country, Blue Grass Hip Hop you name it. If you break music down like a family, what you have is an African family tree, with African music being the roots.

OMG! I defintely Co-sign wit'cha on this here subject! I always heard them comments(from black ppl) of him bein' like that. IMO our culture should appreciate him doin' many otha genres than the regular stuff(rap/r&b). I am proud of what Prince is doin' he reppin' 4 us & showin' that we can do more than just rap/r&b. 1 song in particular ppl have said that's more directed 2oa white audience is 'Little Red Corvette'..I LOVE that song(listened 2 it in school & on the bus 2day biggrin). & there's plenty more. I'm glad he broke da barrier makes me very proud & take even deeper pride(on da music side) within my culture.

You do realize that, after da year 2007, you will be required ta actually spell out yo wordz and speak propa English to get a job or into college? Just a thizzot.
But seriously, I think it's the younger people today that see P as white. Since mainstream black music nowadays seems to promote the ultra hard thug nigga with spinners on his Escalade, sportin mad platinum and ice as the model brotha, if you ain't with dat as a musician then you straight up white. You think these same brothas would see someone like say, Darius Rucker differently? When I was a youngsta in HS, the brothas and sistas I knew thought Prince was the shit. They realized that LRC was geared for the radio, but that Lady Cab Driver was the real thing. Things have changed. I can see the younger MTV crowd listening to Prince and thinking that he's white, cause they don't hear anything outside of what is on BET, MTV, etc. Think about it.

As a black man, I have always appreciated the versatility in Prince's music from rock to r&b. I hardly ever listen to urban radio because they only play mostly r&b, rap and hip-hop. I guess urban radio believes that all blacks listen to only r&b and hip hop which is NOT true.

I agree wholeheartedly. As an African American male in Atlanta, I've found that Prince has a very large following in the black community. However, he gets no love on the "popular" stations like V-103, etc. except for when his concerts are in town. I honestly feel that Prince's core audience appreciates his versatility, regardless of their skin color. The naysayers, black or white, are usually the ones that like one genre of music. At the 4/30 concert in Philips, I was sitting next to a cross section of African American people and they loved his guitar work as much as his ballads.

growing up in the midwest (cleveland) the view amongst blacks is and has always been positive. the same is applicable in detroit, chicago etc. living in boston currently, its hard to say what the vibe is among the blacks folks here though i assume its the same. with that said, we will always support our own talent.

That's right! I think that just because *some* blacks think P is weird or gay doesn't mean that if something went down, they'd abandon him. Quite the contrary. If blacks can stick by R. Kelly, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Jason Williams, O.J. Simpson (unfortunately), and yes...the other MJ, then certainly they'd stand by P in times of trouble. And as I said in my previous post, during the "dark years" it did seem like P was getting love and support from blacks, from the Songs in the Key of Life award he received from the NAACP to the special tribute from Vibe during the "slave" years. Blacks didn't make such a big deal out of it when P changed his name...we simply called him...well, Prince! When "Come" was released, they played "Lettigo" on black radio. When "Diamonds and Pearls" was released, "Insiatiable" was big. And "Eye Hate U" was big on black radio during "The Gold Album" period. Even through the "dark years," P's black fans seem to stick with him while many whites just wanted to hear Purple Rain, 1999 and LRC. [I'm speaking from my own experiences.]

Like I said before, it may be where you're from, but it seems to me that in all the major urban cities: Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, L.A., Charlotte, D.C., Houston, Dallas, etc., P has a HUGE black and loyal following.

Musicology is #2 on Jet's Top 20; not sure how well it's doing on Billboard R&B charts, though.

At this year's Pan-African Diaspora Summit we decided he was a gay white man (until he makes another great album). He's eligible for readmission in 2008. smile

Seriously though, you'll always have people, regardless of color, who love him, hate him or could care less.

I've NEVER heard anyone black call Prince a white artist. I've heard the skin bleaching comments. I've heard he plays "white folks music", but never that he himself was a white artist. A lot of people believe that mixed LIE that he put out there, but that tends to be as far as it goes. The brotha is a brotha. He just likes and plays different styles. Its all good.

A lot of people believe that mixed LIE that he put out there, but that tends to be as far as it goes. The brotha is a brotha. He just likes and plays different styles. Its all good.

thats what I was saying..a lotta blacks say that he plays "white folk music." What in the #@$% is white folks music?? I love that fact that he is versatile musically. That is one of the MAIN attractions that I have for Prince

Its one of the things that I like about Prince, too. He blends styles well.
If you are white and don't know what the phrase means, I understand. If you are black and don't know what black folk mean when they say "white folks' music", you're culturally out of touch and I can't help that.
I usually try to counter that phase with knowledge by explaining the roots of rock to the ignorant, but sometimes I just let it go, especially if its going to spawn a drawn out debate that I don't feel like getting into.
