That's probably the one song that means most to me lyrically! In fact, I'm gonna go over to the other thread and put it down as my most meaningful song... Could just be that he doesn't have a love life. Where's the difficulty in understanding Computer Blue? It's just a guy who needs to get laid using the metaphor of a computer. "Dolphin"- definitely about his struggles with WB
I don't figure that either. Dolphin to me is about feeling alienated and not having self confidence. I know u people worthless scum give no heart but wrath of insults a brain-driven wave of destruction your bite is worse than your vocabulary. Shame on you all of you. Go feed your pigs coward.

Dissecting to the lyrics to "Computer Blue" is difficult, because the version that appears on the 'Purple Rain' album is an edit of the much longer version. The longer version had more lyrics, which would give you a better understanding of what he really means.

All I have to do is shut my eyes and point to any given spot on the track listing of "The Rainbow Children", but that's too easy.
I'd have to say "My Computer", because why would he use samples from AOL (hello: AOL/Time Warner?). Of course, that song was probably recorded before the big merger, I know, I know...

yeah, anything at all on TRC.

I read in the footnotes to The Hits that someone bet Prince he couldn't write a song with that title, so he did! Someone=Sheena Easton who sings on the song, and who he was dating (read ****-ing) at the time. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

7, 3 chains o'gold.
Why do people look for 1 meaning in lyrics which r rich in double-meaning and metaphor? Sure, Alphabet Street is about "going down", but it's also about transcendence (in the Paisley Park, Calhoun Square category) and about getting the "funk" - it's like a declaration of intentions 4 the Lovesexy album which is richly influenced by old school funk. Dolphin may b about the battle with WB, but I read somewhere that he was heavily in2 some book abbout reincarnation at the time, and I've always found the image a powerrful comment on alienation and misunderstood spirituality. S&C - the fact that it may b inspired by an actual person, doesn't make it any less about psychedelic transcenedence. Etc. (good thread, BTW) "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

"Starfish and Coffee" --oddest title for song
"The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" --just startled me the first time I heard the song "3 Chains O' Gold" "7" "The Sacrifice of Victor" -- Prince must have been on another "plane" when he wrote these songs "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise." "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."
"We had fun, didn't we?" -Prince (1958-2016) 4ever in my life

"La,La,La,He,He,He" Dayum, what the hell? I didn't care, still was boppin my head to that one. Love the dog sounds.
I am a dog, outside u're door, i have been there since a quarter to 4....ow,ow,ow,ow Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

"My Name Is Prince" is tops...
How in the Hell can someone sing-a-long to the chant; "Ah Aaahhhhh Ahhhh Ahhhh-uh (Ah-a-ah)"? This is some ol' AfricanBambatta type o' mess (And yes, I do like African Bambatta sometimes) It sounded like WB and the Gameboys were forcing Hiphop into his sound.. Were they trying to emulate Bell Biv Devoe? Tony M. : "It's time to get Ingni,Ingni,Ingni,Ingnorant.." What The? I thought The Symbol CD was trash on track one. Thank God there were some serious classics on this CD after Track One. And the Video? Prince thuggin' in the streets? With a Mic for a Gun? I bet he'd request that Warner Bros. keep that master.

Sometimes lyrics don't even make sense to the author. If you got a crazy imagination, you just go with it. Inspiration hits and you just write it down. The cool thing about not understanding a song is that you can make it mean what you want!
This is a really cool thread though. micorison, jedipadawan & CreoleFreak, you guys rock! That's some serious Prince analysis! I'm not a woman I'm not a man I am something that U'll never understand I'm not your lover I'm not your friend I am something that U'll never comprehend

I was thinking about this thread 2day (how warped am I - I'm on the org, even when I'm not!), and it occurred 2 me how strange it is 2 claim not 2 understand Starfish and Coffee. U either get it or u don't - "If u have 2 ask, u'll never know", or:
"If u set ur mind free baby, mayb u'll understand..." "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

wellbeyond said:[quote] lordlee said: Y is this incomprehensible? It is about a girl with special needs who was in the same year as Prince at school. She was probably autistic and lived in her own little world.
How the HELL do we know she had "special needs"??...Which lyric exactly points to Cynthia Rose being a "special needs" child??...That's just shit Prince fans tried to figure out on their own...lol...for all we know, Cynthia Rose was just a cool kid...lol... "Cynthia wore the prettiest dress, but different colored socks"??...well, when I was in high school, I had a classmate named Rick Hall who wore different colored shoes...lol...and he wasn't "specially abled", either...he was just a unique kid in that regard...lol "She always stood in the back of the line, a smile beneath her nose..."....welp, there were a whole BUNCH of student who had "smiles beneath their noses" all the time...not cuz of special needs, but cuz of special weeds..lol.. "Cynthia wore a happy face, just like the one she'd draw...on every wall, of every school..."...That's not "special needs"...that's VANDALISM!!..lol...Since when was graffiti a sign of a "special needs" kid??...sheeeesh... Or finally, maybe it's cuz of the chorus..."If you asked her what she had for breakfast, this is what she'd say...'Starfish and coffee, maple syrup and jam..butterscotch clouds, a tangerine, and a side order of hame...'"...You probably were thinking "Ok, that right there shows that Cynthia's mind was different from everyone else's, to give an answer like that...", right??...Well, guess what...in that same song, Prince says he and "Lucy" looked inside Cynthia's lunchbox, and SAW all that shit in there!!...lol...so it's obviously NOT simply the ramblings from the mind of a "special needs" kid...apparently that shit really existed if these two "normal" kids can see that shit just by poppin' open Cynthia Rose's lunch pail, right??...lol Er... Prince said it himself in the old 'Ask 0+>' section. ----------

Okay, since everybody's in a decipherin' mood.
'Splain this one: In 'The Ballad of Dorthy Parker' Prince sings: "My pants were wet, they came off but she didn't see the movie cause she hadn't read the book first." That's easy enough, but what did he mean by the follow up: "Instead she pretended she was blind; an affliction brought on by a witch's curse." ????

hey anx, you got it. that was a good 3 years before the merger i believe. sure is ironic now though, eh? that was one of the most embarassing parts of emancipation, and there are quite a few on those 3 cds although as the years go by sometimes i really yearn for a few tracks from that set. 'holy river' is one of the most bautifully autobiographical songs he has ever allowed to be released...gorgeous. as for 'my computer,' sadly i gotta say i can relate to scanning my computer, looking for a site...make believe it's a better world, a better life, although the line i have child, i have a lot to explain part always gives me a sharp twinge of sadness. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.
