I have "Blue", " Mingus", "Hejira" and "The hissing of the summer lawns" and I think they are all so profound and so beautiful... I know that slowly slowly I will try and get all the others.
I terribly like Joni's voice and the way in which she uses it.

BLUE - probably my fav, if I was forced to choose. Mostly just Joni and a guitar or piano. 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' is one of my favorite songs too. Also includes 'A Case Of You', 'River' & 'My Old Man'.

COURT & SPARK - a close 2nd, includes 'Help Me' (as name checked in The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker), 'Free Man In Paris' & 'Twisted' (always makes me smile).

THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS - not an immediate favorite, but well worth it (kinda sneaks up on you, this one). When I bought it I thought "Mmm, It's OK...", but it grew into one of may favs, works very well as a whole album. Includes 'Harry's House - Centerpiece' (brilliant), 'In France They Kiss On Mainstreet' & 'Shadows And Light'.

DOG EAT DOG - not everone likes her 80's work, but I really like this album. It does have a few too many 'special guests', but the songs shine through. Includes 'Tax Free' (worth it for this track alone, very scathing about TV evangelists), 'Ethiopia' (haunting) & 'Dog Eat Dog'.

HEJIRA - another album I got into after repeated listening. The first album where she really began expanding songs (both in length & musically). Includes 'Coyote' (probably my fav track on this album), 'Hejira' & 'Song For Sharon'.

Her songs make me cry... I really love her and I have all of her albums. I have to agree, best are BLUE, HISSING OF SUMMERLAWNS and HEJIRA. But every album has beautiful gems. I like LADIES OF THE CANYON with "Big Yellow Taxi". Amazing, she recorded these albums when I was born... My orgname is one of her songs.

I suggest just buying a cheapy second hand album, if you like it you will get hooked wink.

There is no space enough here to talk about her, but I like emailing about it or orgnoting wink.

Funk

And we must not leave out "Miles of Aisles", the live album...amazing...Great road trip disc! My favs also include:

Blue
Court & Spark
Ladies of the Canyon
For the Roses
The first Album

I never got into her music of the later 70s...but I did start buying her albums again with "Night Ride Home", "Turbulent Indigo" and "Both Sides Now". Her voice has transformed into a totally different sound compared to her early work...now her voice sounds similar to Sarah Vaughan. Her lyrics are brilliant!

Her "Hits" release is a great starting point.

My favorite Joni songs are:

A Case of You (i wish Prince would have used more the lyrics more completely, but love his version)
Big Yellow Taxi
Come in From the Cold

"I am not some stone commission
Like a statue in a park
I am flesh and blood and vision
I am howling in the dark
Long blue shadows of the jackals
Are falling on a pay phone
By the road, and all I ever wanted
was just to come in from the cold

...When I thought life had some meaning
Then I thought I had some choice (i was running blind)
And I made some value judgments
In a self-important voice (i was outa line)
But then absurdity came over me
And I longed to lose control (into no mind)
Oh all I ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold"
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark
