Interesting that only 1 person has mentioned anything from The Rainbow Children so far. I personally found that while it took a great deal of time and several careful listens before I felt I understood the album. The Mothership Connection... Funk, Soul, R&B, & Jazz every Monday night @ 8:00 p.m. Listen @ www.wqaq.com (We are off the air 4 the Summer. Returning in early September 2004)

SLAG said: wellbeyond said: "She always stood in the back of the line, a smile beneath her nose..."....welp, there were a whole BUNCH of student who had "smiles beneath their noses" all the time...not cuz of special needs, but cuz of special weeds..lol.. I've often wondered--WHERE ELSE would her smile be? A smile ABOVE her nose would just be scary! How about a smile just left of her elbow? A friend of mine said "butterscotch clouds" meant pancakes. Okay, what's so weird about what she had for breakfast then? Lots of people have "butterscotch clouds" for breakfast if that's really what that means. My "knowledgeable" friend is still unable to explain what "starfish" is a reference to though. LOL!!...Now, see??...Slag understands me!!...And she's proberly right about the "butterscotch clouds" bein' pancakes...!!...Yep..Ol' Cynthia was most likely lightin' up behind the school dumpster, THAT'S why she's smilin' all the time and writin' on walls...she's high..!! Cynthia Rose, a "special needs" child??...I dunt TINK so, Lucy....the only "special need" Cynthia had was that special need to get toasted every morning before class...

Dude, that's about whackin' it... lol. That's exactally what Tamborine is about.
Wellbeyond is right that "Starfish and Coffee" is pretty incomprehensible, and I'm not sure I buy the autistic girl thing, but it's the best explination I've heard. I have to go with "Pop Life" sections of the song make sense but I don't get what the overall point is. And since we're talking about ATWIAD... America is incomprehesible, it's incomprehensible how a person who makes the statement that "if u mess with the flag to them you're still a spade" about the whole idolitry of the flag, previously made the statement "jimmy nothing never went 2 school - they made him pledge aligence and he said it wasn't cool - nothing made jimmy proud - jimmy live on a mushroom cloud... teacher why won't jimmy pledge alligence?" The whole 'red scare' aspect of that song is disturbing... and that 25 minute version? My lord. That's incomprehensible...

actually, I am still trying to decipher TRC. Some of the cuts are deeply obvious, but then you hear them again and something else could be going on...I will admit I haven't gotten over the actual MUSIC yet. The words will hit me later. Rise up

Y is this incomprehensible? It is about a girl with special needs who was in the same year as Prince at school. She was probably autistic and lived in her own little world. Ummmmm... not to be mean, or any such thing, but why do you say she was probably autistic? Not trying to start anything, just trying to understand why you chose that disorder.

I read in the footnotes to The Hits that someone bet Prince he couldn't write a song with that title, so he did!

"Strays of the World", "Orgasm", "Dolphin", "Three Chains O Gold", "The Wedding Feast", "Courtin' Time", and most of "Chaos and Disorder" are incomprehensible to me. I think they are some of the worst songs ever, from any artist. (But a small amount compared to the good songs, thank God!)

I would have to say "Dance On", "Tamborine", "Three Chains O' Gold", and all of "The Rainbow Children"...sorry guys!

If Alphabet Street is really about oral sex, what exactly does "I'm going to drive my daddy's thunderbird" mean?
I remember some song where he says "my daddy's come back just to haunt you physically" or something. (What song is that again?) So what is the deal with his daddy? No Candy 4 Me

"Strays" is out of context because it was written for a musical (from my understanding) so without the characters it's hard to say. But a simple explination is that it's saying that all people of the world who don't fit into the regime are invited to a peaceful place where they can all be happy. Kind of like what "Paisley Park" is about, or "Calhoun Square" for that matter. "Dolphin" is Prince saying 'Why the F--k doesn't anyone hear what I'm trying to say!' It seems that it's sort of in reference to the fact that when he was going against WB people thought he was only whining. "If I came abck as a dolphin would you listen to me then" is like saying 'unless I'm an endangered species, or part of some kind of pollitically correct movement, no one listens to the message of corporate hypocracy that I'm trying to send.' -"You can cut off all my fins, but to you're ways I will not bend I'll die before I let you tell me how to swim" could be directed at society or WB 'don't tell me how to do my job, I'm going to say what I want to say even if you break me for it.' "Courtin' Time" is just silly "Chaos & Disorder" is just saying that he can't help but notice all the bad things that are going on in the world "I'm jsut a no-name reporter, I wish I had nothing to say" and how everything has changed, "Intercourse used to mean fun" - "Car-jack used to mean 'flat tire'" that section with the clown music always cracks me up. "The Wedding Feast" I can't even try to explain. If anyone disagrees or can expand on my exlinations please say so. I'd like to know.

and a lot of people mentioned "3 Chains o' Gold" I really love that song, but I can't pretend to understand it. Anyone who knows, or even has a theory should post it.
