I don't believe this quote. The guy writes music for other people and does covers as well.

Damn straight. He's entirely within his rights to not like it when people cover his shit...but then he needs to not do covers himself. Granted, perhaps every musician he's ever covered has given him the personal permission to do so. But he still shouldn't come out and say nonsense like "write your own tunes." Many covers are signs of respect (no pun intended!), and can introduce listeners to music enjoyed by the artist who's doing the cover.

My guess is that he wrote so many songs himself he can do that sometimes. Anyway this is also directed at those who don't do nothing but covering....

Music legend Prince has slammed rockers The Foo Fighters for covering his song ‘Darling Nikki’. Prince, 45, was horrified when he discovered Dave Grohl’s band had done their own version of the song, which appears on his 1984 classic album Purple Rain. Prince snipes, "I don't like anyone covering my work. Write your own tunes!" And the reclusive superstar is also furious that his recent release ‘Musicology’ has been treated as a comeback record. He fumes, "I never went anywhere." (wenn)

Apparently, this quote was first from Entertainment Weekly.

Yeah, and its alright for him 2 change titles of other peoples material, like Jimi Hendrix's "Red House" to "PURPLE House" on the new Hendrix tribute CD!!!!!
Yet if another artist tried 2 do the same with any of his stuff, he would create total shit!!!!! lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

Also, did he write Just My Imagination, Miss You, Honky Tonk Woman, Kansas City Blues, I'll Take U There, Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothin'????? I dont think so!! I dont remember ever seeing them in his songwriting catalogue!!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

But then, on the other side of the coin, is anything thats written in that gossip rag true???? I never place my faith in any of type of reading fodder!!! Heat Magazine is just another National Enquirer to me!!!! lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

Could it be that P is probably agitated by not having to grant permission to these artists who wanna do covers? The law of compulsory license says that anyone can cover a song if they pay a certain amount to the publishing company. Maybe if he was asked, he'd have a more positive attitude about it. Then again, he still might tell 'em to go purify themselves..... smile

on the one hand, i think thee message is valid. i like and respect song writers. most of the people i love in music write their own material.
the thing that is odd about the quote, is that aretha franklin's version of respect is a cover of otis redding's original. otis redding wrote it and released it as his own song, and aretha covered it, and had the big hit.

Interesting he used that example when he has covered Aretha's "Dr. Feelgood" himself.

It is. Otis Redding originally record Respect. I personally dig his version better than Aretha's.

"Uk's gossip mag Heat"

"Gossip mag" being the key phrase there. Before we go flying off the handle, let's remember that more likely than not, he did not even say this. Prince is certainly smart enough to know that Aretha's version of "Respect" is a cover in the first place. Plus, if I remember right, he did not mind at all when Alicia Keys covered "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore".

I'm sure this quote was taken out of context. I just don't see P saying something like this.

cool Has anyone read the interview in Aprils Entertainment Weekly Issue with Prince on the cover??? That's where UK'S Heat got this quote from. He said this when he spoke about Ginuwine covering When Doves Cry. That's when he brought up Aretha's Respect. "If anyone tried to cover 'Respect' by Aretha? I would shoot them myself!" Unless this was a printing error....I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!
