Sorry slickdog, but that snippet quote was from the EntertainmentWeekly interview. He had better be on the lookout for Issac Hayes, since he is covering "Soul Man" during his concerts. Them Scientologist (sic?) is scarry demon headlp cop.

No, he was pretending that the band played this without his approval. (Which didn't exactly work when i heard him do it because I'd also heard him rehearse the song several times earlier that day.)

As for "scamming something off of someone": plenty of examples of Prince using another artist's work without properly crediting him/her. Ask Sandra St. Victor for instance.

Just because it's in print doesn't mean it's true. Do you think magazines sell the "truth"? People don't pay for the truth, and that's the TRUTH! Sure. Prince is going to shoot someone, or even suggest violence because that's what he believes? Think about it. His message is love and togetherness, nothing less.

You know, I really hope this was a joke gone bad that just didn't translate. He did say this in EW when he had the cover (no pun intended) of the magazine that week.

I cringe everytime he gets interviewed. I like him better when he just does short, realistic interviews, not long pieces because he always finds a way to sound amazingly stupid and uninformed about facts.

cool Has anyone read the interview in Aprils Entertainment Weekly Issue with Prince on the cover??? That's where UK'S Heat got this quote from. He said this when he spoke about Ginuwine covering When Doves Cry. That's when he brought up Aretha's Respect. "If anyone tried to cover 'Respect' by Aretha? I would shoot them myself!" Unless this was a printing error....I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!

-----
I think he said this because of Ginuwine. Some of the covers of Prince's songs are awful and that could be why he has a bad attitude about it. I just think he does not like how some of the covers have come out.

He did say it. It came right out of the interview in "Entertainment Weekly" (eye bought it as soon as eye saw it; he was on the cover). Eye think it is mostly artists covering his songs not well that bothers him.

This is the problem with Prince, he doesn't want to abide by the same rules he enacts for other artists. The reason he doesn't want others to do his songs--and he knows and fears this--is he is worried the other artist will do a better version of it.

Prince is flakey as a pastry.

Could it be that P is probably agitated by not having to grant permission to these artists who wanna do covers? The law of compulsory license says that anyone can cover a song if they pay a certain amount to the publishing company. Maybe if he was asked, he'd have a more positive attitude about it. Then again, he still might tell 'em to go purify themselves..... smile

I would not be surprised if this was an old quote. They recycled his quotes back in the day...between American teen rags like Right On! and Tiger Beat over to the English ones. And it does sound (the more I think about it, the more it sounds like an old quote...I was in my early teens and thus completely enthralled and can quote stupid stuff from that time if you let me) like Prince today.

Jon Bream (who was quoted liberally in the teeny mags) would have info on this...yeah, the more I think...it definitely is an oldie. Because I do remember that quote. He's not agitated by having to grant anything...everybody gets paid these days, thanks to rappers sampling without paying. I would think he'd be agitated by bad samples/covers. He's an artist who understands and welcomes (I think now with wisdom) others covering him. Plus the $$ ain't too bad either.

OMG that is totally a pickup from a mag/article in '79 or early 80s...probably early 80s cuz I believe it was a Prince feature and he looked so fine with his Foster Sylvers afro that I bought 2 copies -- so I could hang pictures both at home and in my school locker. Too funny. Cuz how DARE they! I remember debating with my girlfriends about his doing covers (we called 'em remakes) and which we'd like to hear him do. This was 20+ years ago and now I get into the same conversations with Orgers and NPGers. Wonderful.

Plus, yall, he has made tons of $ from others covering him. On the R&B charts: Stephanie Mills (How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore - she knocked it out...powerful voice...made u feel it just like Prince did...and it was a top R&B hit for her); Me'lissa Morgan (Do Me Baby - took me awhile for that one); Todd Rungren and Cindy Lauper both redid When U Were Mine...Cindy had a hit... TLC doing Get It Up...Tina Turner doing Let's Pretend We're Married.
There's a country band out there that has made a wonderful bluegrass version of Take Me With U -- and it works!

The comeback part is true...I read that in an AP article...made me holla LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock U Out": "don't call it a comeback; i been here for years".

Well thanks for taking me back (again) to my teenage years. I love that I've stuck with Prince and I'm soooo proud and happy for him. I'm even more happy for all of us that we get to enjoy his artistry.

Oh BS. He's been peddling this lame "covers are evil" crap for years, and now he's adding an ever greater stupidity to the nonsense by using a cover version as an example of an original that can't be bettered, while forgetting he's covered the song himself. Then again, he's done numerous covers during his career, there's a two-page Uptown article that details I don't know how many and that's from more than five years ago IIRC. And BTW, Prince is doing covers on his most recent tour -- though I bet he doesn't know the original song that "No Diggity" is based on.

And once again the Prince fams come out in force and make asses of themselves. "Ooh he didn't say it." "It's an old quote." "He was obviously speaking faster than he could think." Amazing what the lot of you will do to make up excuses. So, figured out yet who or what's to blame for the homophobic attitudes displayed by Prince in recent years?
