"The Truth" A Classic? I put "The Truth" CD on this weekend, just in the background whilst I was doing some jobs round the house and it Really is worth digging out if you haven't listened to it for a while.
It really was excellent, I liked it before but in the midst of all this Prince Mania I really wish people could catch a glimpse of this "Classic" acoustic Album. If you have never heard it then go out and but the Crystal Ball set if not for all 4 CDs, then just for the stripped down acoustic sound of "The Truth" [This message was edited Mon Apr 26 13:56:32 2004 by Savage] [This message was edited Mon Apr 26 13:59:16 2004 by Savage] http://www.myspace.com/savage1999uk

Too samey, samey, not enough juice. I give it a high B+.

Yes, it was good. It was so different to the rest of his stuff though that it took a while to like.
I think its quite emotional too, with Comeback. I also think Animal Kingdom was one of the best ones. It would have been successful in the public eye if it was promoted as an album in itself and not part of CB.

but saying that CB was so great that anything bundled with it would pale a bit.

It is definetly a classic because Prince does something he rarely does now: He takes chances. The sounds on the album are very cutting edge, and his playing is muted, but sweet.
The songs are amazing and really well written. The music is powerful and jarring. The vocals are forceful and soulful. Sure is a classic buddy. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Funnily enough, I dug this out this weekend for the first time in ages too!
I always loved the song 'The Truth', very atmospheric, and 'Don't Play Me'. I also really like Third Eye, very underrated song, strange off-tune guitar start, but the great Paul-Simon-Graceland-type bass in the background really adds to the song, and I like the lyrics, 'In the end the only 1 who can save U is U'. Animal Kingdom is good, how many people would write a song about being a vegan?! But the, what I assume, are dolphin noise are a bit overdone, especially since we don't really eat dolphins! Man in a Uniform is good but I played it for my brother and he started laughing as soon as he heard that cheesy military synth bit - I can only assume Prince was having a laugh at our expense with that. We're still waiting for the full-on version of Welcome to the Dawn since it explicitly says this is the acoustic version. I think Circle of Amour is a bit wierd, Prince singing about some high-school girls getting their period? strange material. The other songs I find a bit bland although nice enough. For an 'acoustic' guitar album it seems Prince couldn't help fiddling and adding the odd instrument here and there - you get the feeling he's far happier when doing a full production on a song. I think Prince was right to give this one away for free, it would have died a death if released as a proper album I think, but it sits uneasily as the 4th disc with Crystal Ball, it sounds nothing like any of the songs that come before. He should have waited and released ONA with The Truth, that would have been interesting, an acoustic piano and acoustic guitar album together!

God, I did the same with KAMASUTRA...
But I just laid down and enjoyed it Too bad they were not released separately. I mean, you can get the truth in Crystal ball quite easily, but KAMASUTRA!! Anyway... Great Job P!! Peace "America is a continent..."

Definitely, 'One of your tears' and 'Comeback' superb, listen to this track on a warm summer days or on a Sunday morning or a lazy day. I also think that 'One Night Alone' is underrated - the track 'Avalanche' is simple breath taking I still cannot believe that he wrote that track. The lyrics are so profound the music so deeply spiritual

The Truth is definately a classic, and that's an understatement.
It represents Prince expressing himself. I can't understand why peeps here can't dig 'Animal Kingdom'. Peace. G. "He's a musician's musician..."

I loved it for the first several listens.
Then I listened to it with my girlfriend and we both decided that is was kind of average. I just guess that it's a good album to listen to alone, 'cause it's too weird to be fully enjoyable with others. I think.

Too bad it wasn't released when it was planned -- about a year before Crystal Ball. It really deserves to stand alone on its own. A wonderful album!

I think it's a classic...of the 90's, anyway. The Truth, Don't Play Me, Third Eye, Comeback and Welcome 2 the Dawn are my favorites. The Other Side of the Pillow is cool, and I even like Animal Kingdom 'cause I used to date a vegetarian. That song got me some serious play.
On the serious tip, he wrote "Comeback" for his dead baby. Deep water right there, y'all.

Not a classic album, but falls into the category of "contains classic songs", like the bulk of Prince's albums.
