It's not very good, but it's better than "Mucoussludgy."

There are many problems with NPS. Here are just five:

1) It’s overproduced. Lots of the songs sound cluttered and the dense and too clean

production is impenetrable.

2) P. singing sounds like shit. With the exception of the three good songs (Come on,

Wasted Kisses, and the One) P.’s not even singing. And when he is singing the lyrics

are unoriginal and uninspired. E.G. Mad Sex? Not one of the worst tracks but still

corny, tacky, and devoid of soul.

3) The entire record is derivative. There are few, if any, new ideas on NPS. NPS

sounds like a piss poor version of Parliament.

4) NPS is just not funky. Comparing NPS to funk classics like “Big Payback” “Fresh”

and “One Nation Under a Groove” reveals just how truly terrible NPS really is. NPS

lacks the vitality, rawness, and originality that all great funk records have in common.

5) NPS has no soul. Not even a little bit. “Push it Up”!? WTF? That song is so corny it

sends shivers down my spine. Plus “I like Funky Music” which is far, far, far

from being funky and “New Power Soul”…these three tracks are just a straight up insult

to funk music.

Anxiety

I think some of the lame attempts at party songs, like "Eye Like Funky Music", "Push It Up" and the title track, ruin the stronger material on the album for a lot of people. I was a hardcore hater of this album for years, till a few months ago I realized that there were at least like three or four songs on NPS that I really really like, so it's really not fair for me to goof on the album so much...but when that album gets stinky....WHEW...betta open a window, that stank'll make you run for the border...

...I think one of the reasons NPS left such a stale taste in my mouth is because of when and how it was released. I think 97/98 was kind of a low point in P's career, both in terms of inspiration and commercial success. Emancipation had just fizzled out, the tragedy with the baby and the divorce from Mayte was happening and his attempts to keep media scrutiny under lock and key were clashing with any success Emancipation could have had, with all its songs about being a husband and having a baby (that picture of him in a baby's playroom is so sad to look at in retrospect); the Crystal Ball fiasco had just happened, and tons of fans were pissed at him about that; the novelty of the whole symbol/slave/TAFKAP crusade was wearing off; and to cap it all off, '97 seemed to mark the arrival of one Mr. Larry Graham (and the less said about Doug E. Fresh, the better). Mainstream music fans were through with him, and it felt like a lot of the fans weren't too far behind.

When NPS came out, I had no idea it was in wrecka stows. I think I bought it two weeks after it was released, and I only bought it because I stumbled across it at a store and thought, "hmm, I wonder if this is a new Prince/NPG album or some kind of import knock-off quasi-bootleg thing?" The art and design looked uninspired. The tracklisting seemed all messed up. The whole thing just seemed slapped together. Then Prince started promoting some deal with Larry and Chaka, and I had no idea what he was on about or what the whole focus was supposed to be. It all seemed a mess to me, and the strength of NPS didn't justify me being bothered to figure it all out this time around.

And when RAVE came out, it only strengthened my dislike for NPS - it seemed like Prince had hit a slump and that the good stuff was behind him.

Over the past year or so, however, I've granted amnesty to all my '90s Prince albums...I've been trying to listen to all that stuff with an open mind, trying not to color the music with what was going on with him at the time, and just trying to decide if I think these are good SONGS or what...and while RAVE is still in the crapper with me (Un2, anyway - In2 is a wonderful salvaging of the album), NPS sounds much sweeter to me now than it did when it originally came out.

I'd challenge all the folks who are quick to slam this album to give it another listen - yes, parts of it are painful and hideous, but there's some damn good stuff on it, too - "The One", "Mad Sex", "Come On", "Wasted Kisses" - I enjoy all four of these songs immensely, which is more than I can say about any ONE song from Rave Un2 (there are lots of songs on there that I don't mind, but no one song that really does it for me). And if an overall crappy album has FOUR songs I really like, then hey - maybe it's not so crappy after all.

Anxiety, the only tracks I dig from NPS are Come On, Wasted Kisses, The One, and possibly Until U're In My Arms Again. That's about it, and the rest of the album is just awful, IMHO!!!! And yes, I've tried listening to it several times, without prejudice!!

NPS was released during a time when Prince was working on the L4OA site and getting all spiritual with his fans. When we heard the name of his next album, we thought it would be a return to Lovesexy (it's when he first mentioned "new power soul"). And then when we heard the name of the first single, "The One," we thought it was going to be about The One, but it wasn't. Beautiful song. Nice video (note the spiritual words in the frame of the video). But it was a big letdown to us L4OA friends. Not to mention, half of the songs are so bad, they make the other songs guilty by association. Soon after, the L4OA site closes (with all of its great ideas buried with those left behind).

Now don't get me wrong, my skip button gets a workout when I put in NPS... lol
