Yeah, it's pretty awful. "Life O The Party" is to Musicology as "We Gets Up" is to Emancipation

Let's start discussing his next album.
Imagine approximately 200,000 people buying Musicology this week, really excited about the new Prince album. Shame

Agreed.
The problem begins with the Opening line "So, you're having a party. Well, bully for you! " Bully for you? That is so lame, it's embarassing. I cringe and it's difficult to listen after that. The rest of the lyrics are almost as bad. Groove be damned, the lyrics suck.

i'm definitely no hater of the album, but EVERYTIME i see the words 'Life O The Party' typed out (or even LOTP), i suddenly hear HER VOICE, and get the shivers. see, i just did it to myself by typing it. i wish it would stop...
funny, i never have the same reaction whenever i see people typing Jughead.

I wonder what would happen around here if he released it as a single? There'd be an outcry! That or it would suddenly start growing on people. It's not that far fetched a notion, after all, he does include it in his live set, so HE obviously thinks it's good! This song is a def hit in waiting.I could sooo see ppl jamming on this in hot clubs this Summer. That song would hit hard .I KNOW dance clubs. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

It's assuring to know that someone thinks like I do. "life" is the weakest song on the album. It has NO FUNK appeal, NO dance appeal, or even a catchy melody you would want to hum. Compared to some of his dance classics ( Hot thang, HQ, Irresistable Bitch, DMSR, Let's Work, and I could run on.....) this is pure rubbish. Easily the most replacable song on the C D!! I agree man... it's one of the more commercial tracks off the LP. Not the best, granted, but since when are the best tracks off an album released as commercial singles?

The bass drum alone is enough to warrant ass-wiggling attention. I've listened to it more than any other track on the CD, scrutinzing and searching it for the reason so many of you hate it. I guess y'all hate "Exodus" too. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why people don't dig this song. I hear "DMSR", "Return of the Bump Squad", "Housequake", "The Work", "Get Off", "Days of Wild"...and so forth...Parts of The Black Album'...It's a silly, stripped- down, layered raw dance track that anyone would love to hear in a club at 1 am with a head full of gin...or maybe we're just too old. I think if you don't like this song, then you - at your core - do not like FUNK. What? The LYRICS are stupid? What was 'Green eggs and ham' or 'Oooo...Alright'...? "Bow-wow-yippee-yo-yippe-yay" Funk IS stupid, but you can't spell funk without F.U.N. Lighten up and Dance.

So that does color my opinion toward LOTP, Musicology, The Work, etc. I (and I know people will crucify me for this) but I think funk is a dated 70's style that should have died with disco. Why did this live on while disco died??? Now there are some songs that people call funk, that I would not label as such (like Lady Cab Driver ... and maybe even DMSR) I do like DMSR ... and Housequake actually ... herb4 said: What? Funk IS stupid, but you can't spell funk without F.U.N. Lighten up and Dance. I do like the fun of DMSR, It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night, Housequake, etc. But do you agree that there's a difference between lame and "stupid fun." Stupid fun is cool while lame is the opposite of. Bully for You? cool? come on... And I think some supposedly hip jargon is forced in ICPC and sounds equally uncool ... which is why i don't like that either. To some lyrics are the saving grace of a song, and to others the beat is.

I don't know WHAT he was thinking, this song is by far the worst track on the album. The beat is groove-able, but get rid of Candy's crappy singing! UGH It might be a lot better without that ...:...Must I become naked?

I too will admit that this is one of the weaker tracks on the album. Prince probably needed to fill up some space on the album, so he took a track which didn't have much effort in it and tacked it on there. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

This song is o.k. at best....and the lyrics are horrid. They sound like lyrics from a New Kids On The Block song...I can hear Donnie Walberg singing "So you're having a party/Goody for you"...
If it weren't for Prince's delivery of the line "U better not come/If U can't stay/....Hey!", I doubt I would have listened to it more than twice.

seems to be a love it or hate it thing!
i had to laugh when i saw this thread because up until today, it was my least favorite, mostly because of candy's vocals, frankly. but it has been running through my head all morning, and i'm starting to change my mind about it. maybe i'm getting brainwashed.

Who's been handing out the lobotomies? Life O' The Party kicks ass, it sounds like he's discovered Reason to me. The only thing I would change would be Candy's vocal, it's just slightly too nasal for me. But that is a groove. A GROOVE!

JediMaster said: I can honestly say, I've never seen a Prince album with such a varied reaction on the individual songs. With albums like TRC, folks either loved or hated the whole thing. This disc is really getting all sorts of reactions on each track. Some folks site "Cinnamon Girl" or "A Million Days" as the weakest track. To me, WDWM2D? is the worst song, but so many people love it! Its crazy, but its kinda cool.
As for my thoughts on "Life O' The Party", at first I didn't care for it, but the more I listen the more I like it. Its almost worth the whole thing for the "...all U Purple hippies bang yo heads on the one" bit. Yeah but what happens after that is crap! i was expecting drums and shit!

Party is definitely the weakest track on the cd
but release a few remixes of it & I could change my mind.

The problem of musicology doesn't come from one track in particular. It's just the whole album that sounds a bit bland. Lacks soul (i'm thinking about the production here), edge, vibration and excitement....
Still it's not a bad album.... just a little disappointing from The man.
