They just showed a spot on CNN about Prince's tour success, and the industry event that this album has been. The music journalist (don't remember his name), said that the giveaway/selling of the CD is a ground-breaking move; one that many musicians will be copying. He said that the reviews and response to Musicology have been great, and that although Prince had received ridicule for his odd behavior in the past, (name change, slave, etc), but that with this move, he's shown that he's thinking ahead of everyone.

I just saw the story. It was pretty good. It remains to be seen how this CD "giveaway" or whatever you call it will work in the future. It could really work out. But in the end, I'm happy to see Prince successful on the commercial side of things.

I think the cd giveaway is a fantastic idea, and I hope more artist do participate in the future!

He's always been forward-thinking. It's been the execution of some of his concepts that have faltered. But with this idea, he's managed to harness a perfect storm. He's leveraging his appeal as a performer and the public's nostalgic demands to sell copies of his album in an unconventional way. You could see a lot of other acts in his generation copy it to generate album sales and heat.
