..I think promotion means more today than it did when he was with WB...I'm pretty sure the music itself made me a fan in the 80's...not the promotion....

I think timing, a tour, and his willingness to make public appearances is what is different this time around.

But I agree, I think Sony is doing a great job. I don't know actually how much they're doing, but it's top-notch.

To be fair to Warner Bros., they did a great job for a long time. I'm sure they were wondering how to promote his music that they KNEW nobody wanted . . .

Prince is doing a great job of promoting this album. he has put a lot of effort in to it. He is all over the place.

He has a more positive relationship with Sony. By the end of his contract with Warners no one was promotion anything they just were wanting the contract to end.

I think u hit the nail on the head! It sure looks like the key here is Prince's desire to make Musicology a hit...a conscious choice to put the pedal to the metal and make every promotional appearance he/Sony can arrange.

I also think the whole idea of "giving away" a copy of the album to every concert attendee was just brilliant. What a great, novel thing for Prince to do...when I first heard about it, I couldn't believe he was serious--most artists go on tour with the goal of selling their new album! And it's terrific that Sony was still willing to commit to an all-out promotion push in the face of this big "give-away." thumbs up!

In a short period of time, Sony has indeed done a lot for Prince!! And WB is benefitting from it in the increase in sales of Prince albums in their catalog!

It's probably too early to tell, but probably Sony.
