Most of the songs on Graffiti Bridge spring to mind, plus so many from NPS that I can't remember the names of all of them.
Daddy Pop is awful. Arms of Orion. Jughead. There are so many. Prince has surely released more terrible tracks than any other artist that I love (for example The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sly). Prince is so prolific that he makes many more great songs in a couple of years than many do in a decade, but likewise he makes more stinkers than others.

You just took the words right out of my mouth. I lost 'contact' with Prince after the Batman & Graffiti Bridge disasters. Got sorta 'in' contact again since Rainbow Children and now with the excellent Musicology. But even in the 'good old' 80's there's too much musical accidents recorded and published as well! Here we go:(in no particular order) GLAM SLAM --> Oh so agreed...was hesitant to go to the club in LA when he had it for fear that he'd play it all the time. Tried to like even the 12" when he tried to funk it up and STILL (nearly 20 yrs later) CAINT STAND IT. Makes me want to puke...like Grafitti Bridge too. DARLING NIKKI Disagree cuz loved the guitar and loved dancing to it...got it played at an LA house party in 84 and almost got in soooo much trouble. The end is pure Prince goofy/hilarity though. Yet fun cuz of the backward masking and the big deal Tipper Gore made over it. It was cheese and Purple Rain the movie only made it more cheesy...but I loved it. 4 THE TEARS IN YOUR EYES...hmmm. Prince is sometimes like reggae, soul and country artists: there's a thin line between heartfelt drama and outright cheese. Either way, I'm never lukewarm. I loved this song for the historical context (We R The World? Please...had Sir Bob "I Don't Like Mondays" Geldof not pulled it off for the Brits and raised TONS of money, no one here would have done it. And let's not forget that Ha...Do They Know It's Christmas was a much better song...I remember as a teenager thinking why didn't Prince just go along...I'm glad he didn't. Can you really imagine Prince singing a song written by Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie??? I also appreciated his lyrics because since all of this was supposed to be about giving...and lo and behold that $$ raised went, uh, where? Having grown up in the church it reminded me of when a visitor came and caught the Pastor slippin', or of always contributing to "the building fund". Lastly, Prince looked DAMN good with his slicked back hair, trench and 12-string...very tasteful for the occasion, cuz LiveAid was truly global and awesome. HOT THING I loved that...another song to dance nasty to. Ha! SOMETHING IN THE WATER (DOES NOT COMPUTE) IIRC. IIRC? I loved it...combo of electronics and heartfelt singing. And on a double album, change is good...fit real well with the electronic 80s. I WONDER U...not groundbreaking, but sensual and atmospheric. If anything I thought it was too short. Makes for a great break on the "mack" tape. But yeah, when u put out a lot, a lot will suck. And that's not talking about the Bsides and boots!

My little pill (even worst) animal kingdom (was he crazy doin' this shit) Tick Tick Bang? I LOVE that song. It's one of those cheesy borderliners for me. Plus having Shake follow it on Grafitti Bridge only helped....one of the worst "Time" songs ever. Sometimes P pulls off the outlandish...Tambourine...Tick Tick Bang...Now (him hollering at the end CRACKS me up) I just heard Animal Kingdom for the first time about a month ago on Launch (!)...and compared to lots of vegetarians I know, I thought it was just fine. Then again, I'm now 35 and have been listening to Prince for 20+ years and never thought I'd hear Prince music I hadn't heard on a "network".

It was Tony, I tell ya! The songs I remember being most annoyed with had T rappin....cuz P was trying to emulate that when he'd been "rappin" for years already! It also might have been the hair...

Ah well, cloudy. You're not me after all. And i was starting to wonder, to be honest. International Lover is very cheesy...however seeing as I heard and fell in love with it during my screaming teens. And Free is pretty sophmoric...yet again, the words and the melody and the puberty make it a fave. I mean, P is full of cheese. So is Marvin...Smokey... Plus International Lover makes one think of that sleeve cover, along with how fine he is in the Automatic video. DAYUM...one of the first times I saw that Wonderful Ass...which it is still, by the way.

okay, it's hard to only name three, but...
3. The Wedding Feast--Way to f&%$ up a great album. 2. When U Love Somebody--I'm completely embarrassed by this song. "Do your dance/But I'm the one your dancing for" followed by the worst instrumental cliche of all time. I do like the end of the song, though I rarely get to it. 1. Diamonds & Pearls--It's well done, but it's the song that has me the most conflicted about prince. After sounding like nobody but himself for thirteen years, he sounds like any generic pop balladeer. The chorus is so cliche, like a rapper saying "throw your hands in the air/wave em like you just don't care" Was he attempting to be cliche, like "If I gave you these crappy polished songs, would you boys & girls be happy fans?" Or is it just a crappy polished song for moneymaking chart topping trend following purposes. I convinced myself it was the former--a metaphor-- just so I could continue listening to prince. But deep down ... I'm not so sure. (Anyone else have thoughts on this?) The synth sergeant pepper horns in the middle, leading to cheesy guitars, and finally, as someone else said "S to the H to the I to the T" Nice Harmonies by rosie, and well executed, but I wish this song had never happened. There's no rap by tony to blame it on like "jughead," no kirky J drumming, no larry graham, no religious BS, not an underwritten song. Possibly prince's best band, huge hit, stinky s&%t. Honorable mention: Poom Poom--Thank god it's buried on disc three of an album nobody has. Check this song out at:
