Hypocrisy!!!

How can Prince call the album "Musicology", talk so much about REAL music, made by people, and then not even use real horns on the title track?
How can he babble about "we don`t want the next generation of musicians be a bunch of computer programers" on Leno, and then use drum computers almost all the way through the album?

I am disappointed. TRC had a great sound, a solid live-feel. "Musicology" - at least most tracks on this album - is a step backwards to the "Emancipation"-days. I find it a boring album.

Just a little bit. After all, you don`t like the real music of TRC, but you actually dig "Emancipation", which I consider a piece of crap.

If Emancipation was made into a long single CD with all the best songs, it would beat the shit out of TRC. Not that it doesn't already, but it would have been awesome.

The songwriting on "Emancipation" is not bad. If he played that album "live" in the studio, using real instruments (just like TRC), then it could have been a decent record.

But I`m sorry, you`won`t talk me out of my opinion that TRC is the best offically released album by Prince! wink

I think this arguement misses the point. They may not be real horns, but he wrote the horn line and he played it on a synth himself. It seems to me when he's talking about real music made by real people, his criticisms are leveled at pop singers who are not musicians, coasting on samples of someone else's material and performing songs written by committee for maximum hit potential.
You better wake up, Stella. This is my town!

EXACTLY!! And its not sampled and looped, either. Prince used NO horns whatsoever for years. All the "horn" lines on Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, etc. are keyboards/synths. Played by real people.

That's what he means. Its not the *sound generator* that matters- its the performance. Same with the drum machines. If you use them mechanically then that is a problem. Prince was/is a master at making drum machines sound organic, interesting, and funky.

I just can't believe all the things people say...
I like the taste of unpredicatable licks- a loop is a loop is a loop UH!!

Finally some people that think this album is garbage. Yes! I can't seem to find the funk in this album anywhere. It leaves me burning for some funk. And it smothers me with cheese. Prince at his worst. Oh well.

Same can be said about you not reading those comments then...
There are people who like the album and write dick sucking posts about how much they like it, so there are bound to be people who don't like the album and write negative shit about it, that's life... Their opinion is as valid as the rest...
This is a Prince forum so everybody has the right to speak their minds on it, accept it...

Hey Raider 1, you're not Prince, so like has been said, dont take his artistic critiscisms to heart. When you claim yourself an artist and put forth something, be it a painting, a poem or work of music, it's critiqued for its merits, you know, just like Prince has been critical of "producer heavy" music.
No hard feelings.

What are you talking about? Virtually every major review has given the album a free ride and Musicology (the song) is proving that if Prince would have played the corporate game during TRC, The Work could have been a hit on MTV, too.
No hard feelings.

So be it...
But have you actually read some of the topics in this forum?
Seems to me that there's more posts praising the album than slamming it...
So it seems to me that you are more interested in the slams than the praises...

Some people are dense. Prince was a "real" musician "back in the day" of Uptown, and he was using synths all over.

And EWM, weren't you all over him for using too many real horns in concert? Great consistency.

I kinda agree. Real horns are always better than synth substitutes, and that goes for all the 80s output too, which was good despite of synth horns rather than because of them.

What's ridiculous though, is when people say 'stop moaning. u produce an album and then u can talk'.

So we have to be as qualified as Prince to critique his work? Who would critique Mozart?

Surely we don't have to be incredibly talented or even mildly musical to have an opinion on music. Of course, it may help to lend insight and an empathy for the way the music has been played or produced, but still, it would be very aloof to suggest I have to go and make a full length LP before I can something about a Prince record! big grin

the only thing is that he really isn't breaking any new ground musically. With the exception of what do u want me 2 do, it is pretty much a typical album with nothing new. But afte 20+ years it would be hard 2 come up with new shit and keep re-inventing yourself. But, all in all , I think it is a better album than rave, new power soul, and news

..No..its not hypocrisy...this isnt a producer driven album..no Neptunes..no Timbaland...jus' lil' ol' Prince..who gives a rats ass if the horns are real?? I think the point is that there is a lack of REAL artists out there... think if Prince were just emerging onto the scene today and wanted to write, play and produce his entire album..the industry would scoff his lil' ass....
