How to turn somebody out & make them a Prince fan in 20 minutes or less!

I may have turned my cousin out on Prince tonight with just a few tidbits from the past few weeks:

    - Showed her the RRHOF performance, but just the guitar solor on Gently Weeps so she wouldn't get antsy sitting through 3 songs (should have done SOTT instead, huh?)... she acknowledged it was "tight" but bolted before I could go further neutral

    - played "The Marrying Kind/If Eye Was the Man In Ur Life" as she stood there, waiting for me to finish mad couldn't tell if she was tapping her leg or having nervous twitches confused

    - MADE her sit down & listen to "Call My Name" in its entirety & went on about my business. When it was over she said (with a huge grin), "I REALLY like that one!" woot!

By the end of the night she wanted me to burn Musicology for her whofarted but I had a better solution - take my extra "free" copy biggrin One day she'll know the difference between MUSIC music & NOISE wall

Turned out any Prince fans lately? biggrin

Excellent topic.

Are you sure she didn't say Call My Name was great just to escape?

I've had my experiences and now I won't make anyone listen to Prince. I'm even reluctant to mention his name. I've made some people listen to a bit of the Small Club boot and they liked it, but I think most people nowadays, especially "serious" music-lovers, are put off by Prince's eclectic style. They either like the funk or the rock or the ballads, but rarely all of them -- they behave like they've been served spaggethi, chinese food and french fries all in the same plate.

What a great way to describe Prince's eclectic style! I've had the same problem with people.

A friend recently emailed me how great the song 'Sign o the Times' was, he'd rediscovered it. So then I made him watch the RRHOF guitar solo and the Beyonce duet and now he has finally realised Prince is a genius and wants to come to the concert.

About bloody time.

Please.....can anyone tell me how to get hold of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance? I have been scanning VH1 in the UK and not seen it, can't find it on the web.....ahhhhhgggg!

Has anyone got it on DVD/VHS that they can lend me/copy for me? Has anyone gat an MPEG, AVI or Quicktime movie I can try?

I'm a desperate man. I may be able to trade if necessary.

My brother, who is 16, has started to admit he likes his music...he thinks 'controversy' is Prince's best song (shows he's got some taste), and when I was playing Vol.1 of The Work the other day he thought 'purple music' was "cool" and seemed to really enjoy 'extra lovable' too.

I told him he'd become a hardcore fan within 2 years tops. lol

My little boy didnt care for Prince. He's 9 so he's listening to the crap on the radio & he watches videos and pretends that he doesnt want to watch Britney shakin' it! I'm sure he's heard Prince daily since the day he was born but he was never interested. Then he saw the Musicology video. He loves it! He's going with me to the concert in June and he wasnt looking forward to it but now he says he cant wait!

Well, what albums have ya got andy?

I suppose the obvious choice would be SOTT...I mean it's got everything, right. smile

I turned on a lot of my friends to Prince with TRC, since my friends are some serious funksters. A few days ago, we were all listening to "Musicology", and everyone got pretty bored. They found the title track "ok", but the rest is plain Prince-pop with no real innovation. I have to agree, this album just doesnt do it for me.

Started seeing a Michael Jackson fan recently who was not into P at all. Within 3 weeks he had some musicology stuff and some old stuff on his ipod. Then bought me Musicology, getting it 3 days early from the wrecka stow he works in.

Never had much luck in the past, but it's a piece of pie with this one.

Everyone I have played Musicology to has loved it and these are people who are NOT Prince fans. One guy I know is a HUGE hip hop fan and has been making fun of me for years for liking Prince but bought Musicology after hearing my copy. Today he asked me if he could borrow The Chocolate Invasion after hearing it on my computer here at work.

The Rainbow Children, while being a GREAT album imo is NOT an album to play to people who don't know much about the guy. I consider myself a pretty hardcore Prince fan but it even took me awhile to really digest and enjoy TRC.

Yeah, that's strange he would name a mostly pop album Musicology. There's not a whole lot of substance for "serious" music lovers to chew on there. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the album, but it's nowhere near the level of TRC or SOTT, etc. Fortunately, I didn't have any expectations other than to enjoy it.

I gave up trying to convert people years ago. I'll let those around me hear it and they can take it from there.

well, my brother, i have talked about him on here before, i am taking to the concert on the 4th of may woot! woot! he plays the guitar quite a bit, so i brought him in after i got my surround sound hooked up, sat him down and made a night out of the RAVE dvd, his reaction was priceless to me, he looked at me and said, "hmm, i didnt realize that prince is that good at playing guitar, he really has incredible talent !" since then, i have been giving him little bits along the way, bought him NEWS for christmas, he loves it !!!!! and now, i send him regular emails about your comments in here about the concert nod oh, and i also had a little get together the night of the grammys, how proud i was to have the man open the show woot! he couldnt make it here to enjoy the RRHOF, so i made a tape and had him watch it, he was blown away by the solo....seems i may win him over yet party however, i think its even better that i got his 3 year old son listening to prince, he likes to 'play' the guitar like daddy does, so i made him a cd of princes greatest guitar moments, my sister in law says thats one of his biggest requests around the house dancing jig plus i got my two kids heavy into prince too !! i cant do it alone, thats for sure, but, i hope that the next generation learns to love prince as much as we do, and keeps our man runnin for a loooong time to come woot! woot!

Well I figured if there was ever a time to get people into him it's NOW - w/ the video in rotation & hopefully some upcoming airplay for Call My Name folks have a chance to know what he's really about & get below the surface w/ a little help wink I was glad to hear she likes Musicology (the song) which I like too but come on, it ain't mindblowing. So if she digs this she's gotta be open to being exposed to his truly incredible stuff. I'm hoping at least smile

Good points. I could talk Prince all day (and used to in my younger days), but around more casual music fans, I don't talk Prince much if at all.

One of my most favorite convrersions..... I had just started dating my fake boyfriend (long story, don't ask) and he's really into Blues & Jazz. I told him I wanted him to hear a song. I popped in Prince's "Vault" and played "When the Lights Go Down".

Halfway through, after Prince started singing, he turned to me completely mesmerized and asked me "Who is this?" With complete vindication I threw my arm into the air and exclaimed "Prince". He wanted to hear more of his stuff.....

I gots 2 say that it was that RRHOF performance that converted my entire plain jane, white bread eating, non-Prince listening family.

One Saturday morning my brother out in boondocks Wisconsin told me that he and my parents and my sister saw the guitar solo the night before on VH1, and were INSTANT believers.....so much so that they went ahead and got in line at Ticketmaster at their local mall that Saturday morning and snatched up 8 tix. Talk about a paradigm shift.....

All my past efforts proved fruitless...it was The Man's Axe that did the conversion.

I've had a very hard time describing that phenomenon to myself. It's been done perfectly here. Most people like french fries, most people like spaghetti, most people like chinese food. Hardly ANYONE likes it ALL on the same plate. That is the BIGGEST problem Prince has with getting people to "digest" his music(good word right there...goes with the metaphore smile )
Most of the time when people put on an album to listen to all the way through, they are looking for gener consistancy. Genere consistancy NEVER happens on a Prince record. His genere's jump around like a 5 year old with ADD.
