N.E.W.S challenge! Take it, it ell do ya no harm!

For all you folks that diss NEWS, a few more listens may do you well. Boring? Far from it. I can understand after 1 listen why people would not like it, no lyrics, and music that is seemingly all over the place. But if you really listen to it, it will start to become very familiar to you, the structure will become apparent, and you will hear the album come to life.

I'll use the example with Musicology. I've been reading all the posts here, people listen to something once, say they hate it, only to come back after they listen to the song 5 more times to say it is their favorite now. I can find 2 dozen examples of this easily. This doesn't just apply to Prince music, but all music. It is my opinion that a person can't really know if a song is any good or not until their mind is familiar with the patterns of the music, only then do like or dislike come into the equation. I approach all music this way, I reserve my judgement until after 5 or 6 listens, then, with the beats/lyrics/melody now familiar in my mind, I make my decision.

There is much to be celebrated in P's music, it is a shame to see something so good be locked up without a fair trial smile Especially when I see posts along the lines of "I hated _____ album, or song, when it first came out (x) or even (xx) years ago, I put it in again and i love it now" ... Thats a lot of years of missed enjoyment on something that was great all along, but just cast aside too quickly. I submit that this will happen 1,2,5 even 10 years down the road with N.E.W.S.

So the challenge is this: for those who listened to NEWS once, and then wrote it off immediately, listen to it 5 times this week straight through. You don't even necessarily need to pay attention to it, your mind will, regardless of what you are doing at the time. Then wait a few days, play it again, and see how feel about it, I think you will be very surprised at what you hear.

This post obviously does not apply to those who HAVE listened to it 5 times and still hate it lol

Peace

Okay see now that is my point exactly. I feel the same way. NEWS to me is awesome! but some people just won't give it a fair shot. Actually my big fear about Musicology is that I like it so much already and I have only had it for two days. I belive that music that grows on you and more importantly grows with you is where it is at. NEWS is one such compilation. Still I think you might have wasted your breath because even though to me you know what you are talking about. There are people around here that just hate anything the man does. Hell they might hate you for trying to teach them how to listen.
Peace

Except for "North" I've always dug NEWS. It's not for the pop mindset.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

How u gonna compare a pop album to a experimental/jazz fusion record?

I appreciate both of these albums.. but to compare which one is "better" is simply foolish talk and its silly to even try comparing these.

I'm not really big on NEWS. I've tried listening to it many times, but it just doesn't take you anywhere too interesting a lot of the time.

I do like West quite a bit though, it's damn good.

Ya know what did it for me? Listening to it at work. That might be a sideways insult, I dunno, but listening to it at work totally made me love NEWS. When I'm typing away at my job, it's just enough for me to pay attention to but not so much that I'm distracted. Now, I can listen to it at home and give it more attention on a whole 'nother level. Go on, try it.

Your point is that once you get used to an awful thing it doesn't sound/look that bad.

It happens with those horrible commercial jingles. When you least expect it you find yourself humming to it.

Or you meet phisically ugly people. In a few days you don't think they're ugly anymore. nod

Anyway, I like NEWS mr.green
