Reflection

This is becoming my favorite song on Musicology. I HATED it when I first heard it, but now I love it--althought I HATED all of LoveSexy the first time I heard it and I STILL play that from begining to end.

My thought is, do you think that it is a song about him imagining talking to Andre Cymone and his wife keeps interrupting his thought process?

Listen to it with that in mind. Sort of makes me sad when I hear it. bawl

Also it reminds me of the poem 'The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock' by TS Elliot

Whatchoo think?

interesting interpretation... i don't hear that, though.

however, i agree w/ you... when i first heard Reflection, i was like... eh.

But now i love it... it's my favorite on the album. It's got a dreamy Parade-like quality. It was incredible hearing it live w/ Wendy.

It's just a classic P song. I really think that it grows. One day it will be in the same category as Anna Stesia, Sometimes it snows in April, etc.... a classic.

I just read the poem online and I can see some similarities in thought.

Well, if it's about Andre, then it's very sexy for him to say that when he forgot to water the plants, he only forgot because he was looking at Andre.

If that's the case, then I think Prince is very brave to express that men can lose themselves in one another, without sex and without being homosexual or bi, for that reason.

Deep indeed.

I always thought it was Prince singing to Mani, especially the lyrics where he sings: "Did we remember 2 water the plants 2day...Eye forgot to look up at the moon because...Eye was too busy...Eye was too busy looking at U, baby." Don't think he would be saying that to Andre Cymone. smile

Perhaps this is not a song about an imaginary conversation with anybody. It could just be a song that Prince wrote when he was looking back on his life and reminiscing about when he was younger ("Tell me do you like my hair this way...Remember all the way back in the day...When we would compare whose afro was the roundest...Mirror tiles...Above the bed...Fishing nets and posters...All over the walls"),

Is it me, or does Prince's voice sound sad when he's singing this song?
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Very sad song.. Thinking bout Mother? Which one Mattie,Bernadette, Mayte? Remember Wife,Mother, Lover,Sister,,,,,Wife. This song is about Days gone by and it is about loss. He can't Even look at Wendy. It's Very Deep. Remember he was So Close to Wendy she Spoke for him. Then Mayte spoke for him as he was Tora,Tora. Prince NOW..Sweet as can Be he Speaks for himself and he's ReallyGetting all Comfortable with it. I think Prince has Become Comfortable with his Fame and the High Acolades and Fun he is Experiencing whilst on tour. He has so Opened Up. Prince who I have been Into forever and a day well he's Better Now then Ever. Prince is Gorgeous and a Fox. Talented and his songs and ideas are Great. Fashion Great. Everything Great. He is Right on and I would say A- List. It is Great to be a Prince fan... biggrin Prince makes ya Proud. biggrin

Here's how I see the song.
Its like a frequent reflection of the past.. and the change that occurs.. every line is just about a new thought of the past..
The line "Still its nice to know that when our bodies wear out, we can get another, .... I dont know I was just thinking about my mother" - That line makes me think about his spirituality and where his mother is at.. he's thinking about her. Its almost like a photo book of his past, or him remembering things that meant a lot to him.

This song is coming/came to be one of my favorite prince songs. (in top 10 at least)
I've let this song sink in for a whole year.. and with every listen.. the lyrics, and melody is something truely special.

Do you think the line: Remember all the way back in the day...When we would compare whose afro was the roundest...Mirror tiles...Above the bed...Fishing nets and posters...All over the walls is about his days living in Andre's Basement?

I liked this song when it was first released at the npgmc, then I got tired of it, mostly due to the bad sound quality of the song

but now that I have it on cd I love it, great melody, great and melancholic lyrics

Reflection is by far the best song on musicology in my opinion.I also liked it straight away when I downloaded it a few months ago.It is the only song on the record that is really touching and personal. I love the sound of his voice on it.
It reminds me a bit of the songs on "The Truth" but Reflection is much better.
Would love to hear some more songs like that.Maybe when he actually records something new with Wendy and Lisa.I hope the rumors are true.
