Geez, what's going on? Who would have thought ANY Prince video would ever be #2 on MTV? But it is! Check out the chart at:

I hate to be cynical, but I really feel like we're watching the payolla process unfold here.
Theres no WAAAAAY MTV audiences are feeling this video more than Jay-Z or Avril Lavigne this week. I really love the song, and it's by far the best video he's made in, well, decades, but this is insane! But goody for him, anyway. He deserves it, whether somebody bought it or not.

Yes, it's true!!! I watched the countown today, just curious to see if it placed. Well, I missed numbers 17 to 20, so I kinda stopped watching. Then it got to number 5 and Usher. So I'm thinking: well, time to go to the gym. Ain't no way P is beating Usher and Beyonce. And then....I saw it and man I was screaming and jumping up and down. Youdda thought I was 13 instead of 30!!! Ha!

what your witnessing is the industry showing prince how he will be rewarded when he follows the rules.... that number 2 video is favors, strings pulled and respect... the more success columbia has with princes record the more they know he will continue to work with them.. he is finally getting the push he deserves.

I tend to agree. It's just too weird.

You don't think Warner Bros did the same for him back in the day? I mean payola wasn't extreme back then as it was now. But, if he's gonna have to play the game if he's gonna be distributed by a major.

Just a sign that he really has made up with the record labels. Airplay of Musicology seems to be lagging a bit...but clearly by the video being #2 on MTV is a sign of the marketing powers of Sony

PERIOD!

This is a beautiful thing happening. Prince deserves to be this high up a chart like this. I just find it so amusing that I see this video getting lots of airplay on MTV but I've only seen it twice on VH1, even though others here have seen the video often on VH1. Regardless, I'm happy for Prince.

U can b cynical, but the mtv or bet audiences has been forced fed hiphop and other bullshit fastfood acts. Not that all of the artists r crappy but this is what did'nt happen 2 prince in the mid 90's on. He did'nt get the push anymore. Most of these new acts should'nt b in rotation but they happen 2 b with the right label!

Agreed. Definitely suspicious...4 instance musicology is not appear on the top 20 video streams on mtv.com, although most of the top 20 artists do. Most/all mtv kids go online to see their fave videos again & again. Makes u go hmmm....

Furthermore, isnt BEYONCE & AVRIL on the same label as PRINCE = same video promotion department. Adds up to a shrewd buisness move by Columbia: drop Musicology into MTV video budget block. And VH1, they usually plays MTV leftovers anyway so give them another 4-6 weeks to begin rotation.

I was actually disappointed; I was hoping it would debut at #1 just like his album will at the Billboard album chart next week!!

we're kind of in our own little world here... there are so many comments about how prince sucks & how he can't have any success that maybe we believe it now...

i think it's entirely possible that some people might actually appreciate this video - it's different, and fun to watch. simple as that.

cool Mtv always give an older artist some airplay every now & then when they are the hot topic. That station is not the same it was 20 years ago. The younger crowds perfer their music over real music. Prince has always had a connection with MTV. The same as Madonna. They will give him airplay....because he is the hot artist right now. They also probably are hoping he will do TRL. It's nice to know that they still acknowledge Prince.

Here in Belgium we receive MTV Netherlands and everyday there's a top 11 at 11 (pm).
Prince Musicology was at NUMBER 2 last night! It's been going up since it debuted at 11!
