Prince's weakest songs are the ones where he boasts about how great his music is...

Think about it. 3 songs off the top of my head:

I Rock Therefore I Am
High
Life O' The Party

Any others? Why does he (seemingly) put so little effort into the 'I'm so funky and my music is the best' tracks? Is it deliberate?

(I've edited the title to make it more about the 'NPG music is so funky' tracks, rather than the 'I'm da man' tracks)

hammer I edit therefore I am

My Name is Prince is an awesome song til that shitty rapping interlude totally ruins it. Such a shame, I always have to skip the song once the rap kicks in.

Life 'O' the Party sounds like a great song too til the outdated chorus brings it down a few notches.

Undisputed just plain sucks.

Shame he opens his mouth to boast at all. If he just shut up and played he wouldn't need to say shit.

My point exactly. It's like the people who work in offices and consistently go around laughing at themselves and telling everybody 'I'm so crazy...'

I've always hated "My Name Is Prince"...it's way too damn self-consciously insecure. Usually songs with said artist's/group's name doesn't make for a good song.

He also brags briefly for a different reason in "Automatic," but that one disproves the theory if you ask me.

Outside of the music I couldn't care less that he brags, because he generally backs it up. He said he felt sorry for whoever had to follow him after he opened the RRHOF induction ceremony, and the mofo was the highlight (both times he performed) of an otherwise staid show.

Cocky? Hell yeah, and I wouldn't have him any other way.

I kinda agree with this theory. Like Supernova said, there are some that kinda disprove the theory (i.e. Automatic - even though I think he's bragging sexually which is O.K. thumbs up!) But I think the ones that you mentioned in addition to Jughead, New Power Soul, Daddy Pop, Dead On It (YEAH I SAID IT mad) are all weak in comparison to the songs where he lets his musicianship speak for itself i.e. Housequake, Everlasting Now.

about half of the NPGMC songs are about this. well, not half. maybe a quarter. when i made discs of stuff from that era, a split the songs in 2. on one disc are the love/sex songs. on the other are all of the weak "aren't i and the npg badasses" songs and annoyingly pseudo-political songs.

makes it easier to skip that stuff. or to have it all in one place if you've got a hankering for it.

if it was released during SOTT, then it would have been fresh, new, interesting, ahead of its time. in 1987...

in 2004, it's the same ol' same ol' "npg kicks ass" songs.... yaknow?

Northside, Props & Pounds, High, Freaks On This Side, I Rock There4 I Am, etc.

Yeah, I'm thinking of renaming the thread. I'm realizing that it's the songs where he says how great his music is that are really weak, not necessarily where he boasts about himself (after all, he does that in almost every song over the last 26 years).

I Rock Therefore I Am, (I Like) Funky Music - both good (bad) examples.

nod and what about Prettyman hmm I think Prince brags and boasts because he knows he is the man, not because he is insecure. Regardless of how it sounds why should hip hop artists get to constantly brag and boast when they really have no real musical prowess and P can't. How preposterous is that?

Baby I'm A Star and others negate the "boasting=bad song theory", which is why I changed the title to reflect what I originally meant, "boasting about how great the music is, is usually on weak songs". The boasting itself doesn't make it a weak song - it's just interesting that he usually puts the boasting to weak music.

it's not. i just wish that if he was going to do it, he'd do it with a decent song or 2. Baby I'm A Star was probably the last great one. simply because he wasn't at the time, and it was a self-fulfilling prophecy, that one. and hell, even that song, great as it is, is the worst song on the album.

High and Y Should I Do That are passable, but hardly as great as he's making himself out to be in them.

let's have a look, shall we....?
in the past 8 years, these are just some of the songs where he's tooting his own horn.

I Rock Therefore I Am
Jam Of The Year
We Gets Up
White Mansion
Mr. Happy
Face Down
New Power Soul
Freaks On This Side
I Like Funky Music
S&M Groove
Undisputed
Pretty Man
Cybersingle
High
Jukebox With A Heartbeat
Northside
Props & Pounds
Y Should I Do That When I Can Do This
Life O' The Party

there are a couple decent tracks there, but seriously, would any of them make a "best of 1996-2004"? i mean seriously. there isn't even anything as good as Baby I'm A Star present. they are generally the worst song of whatever batch of songs they're released with.

Modesty is not one of Prince's defining characteristics. Faulting him for being boastful makes about as much sense as criticizing me for being 5' 10".

Personally, I don't think the man has released a memorable ballad since his SOTT peak. That album contained several excellent slower tracks (Adore, Forever In My Life, Slow Love), but I'd be hard-pressed to name a decent one that's been released since. I do have to qualify that by stating that I really haven't listened terribly closely to much of the material he released after Emancipation. However, I am aware that most of the music from that time-frame has a pretty rough reputation.
