What is so different about Musicology?

I've seen the video on UK TV.....LOOKS GREAT, BY THE WAY.....but I am struggling to see what is so different about this song. All of a sudden the music press are liking what they are hearing.....they'er hearing what they've heard for the past decade.

This song is a poor hybrid of The Work and....can't think...whichever song off Emancipation he's ripped the keyboard riff off....memory fails...forgive me.

Without the upcoming re-release of PR this album would receive the same reviews the past decade's work has received. Do not be deceived. This album may NOT actually be a "return to form"....it may simply be the music industry sucking up to someone to help push their product once again.

Oh, and guess who's fallen for it?

I agree, the music world isn't hearing anything different from Prince, maybe they haven't listened to his music for 10 years or so, but Musicology doesn't offer very much that Prince hasn't already done in the past.

With the Grammies, R&RHOF, TV appearances, 80s retro, Purple Rain anniversary, new major label album - I just think it's a case of, it's becoming cool to say you like Prince again.

NouveauDance hits the nail on the head. It's just sad that:
A) Prince, in all probability, thinks that the "people" like him again and that he's going to be back at the top, and
B) It demonstrates the complete contempt the music industry has for both its producers and purchasers.....
"Hey, we got that 'Pimple Rain', or sumthin', thang comin' up. whay we gonna do?"

"I know! Let's suck up to That squiggle guy, what's his name again? Well, whatever, we'll suck up to him for a month or two. Put out another of those albums of his and do a video. He'll think we love him and then he'll help with the "Porpoise Reign" whatjamacallit and then we'll dump him after that."

"Cool. And everyone is on board?"

"Yeah, the press'll do what we want for the duration....remember, they need sales too."

Or am I just a sceptic?

No word on this yet...

and that was the point how, exactly?

Whether or not Purplr Rain is re-released, remastered, re-recorded, repainted and resprayed...who cares.

Quite frankly, the contempt with which the music industry is treating both Prince and his fans is astonishing.

Having said that, I'm in The Netherlands at the moment and I've just seen the first piece of new "Prince" graffiti I've seen in years....hell, it's got to be working, man!

YES, SCEPTICISM AT PLAY!

It's just the opposite...Prince OR his fans haven't been given this much respect since around 1990 or so.

Interesting. One thing I did notice though. Howard Stern used to always goof on Prince and talk about what a jerk he was whenever his name came up. The morning after the Grammys, Stern is talking about how great Prince is.
I too started thinking "hmmm...must be cool to dig Prince now".
It's all good. All the "true blue" know who they are wink
