Not sure. I don't think that people have ever looked at Prince as a paragon of virtue, not even now. Undoubtedly there are scads of fans who are attending these shows that totally lost touch with what Prince is doing in his personal life so I'm not sure that the non-cussing is helping him to reach out to a wider audience.

I like the discussion this thread spawned biggrin

Well, Musicology is a family show, so obviously that means people can bring their kids which means more tickets sold, perhaps more cds purchased.
I can see how people might think that this is being done primarily for $$.
This is not the case. I don't believe that Prince is doing away with offensive language just to make a buck. I agree with you to a point Supa, I do believe that P's Christian beliefs are a big reason why he's not cursing. But I don't see anything wrong with that. No genre of music really needs cursing in order to get a point across.

Absolutely agree, however gettting the point across by using foul language isn't wrong either.

For example in Baby Knows, the lyric that says "She'll make you feel like your stuff aint brown tonight". What would have been wrong with saying "She'll make you feel like your shit don't stink". That's what he meant so why not just say it?

:lol:Just laughing at the picture I now have in my head of folks walking around the hood with cigarettes hanging outta their butt cracks!!!

Personally, I like the way P is now conveying his sexual side. I think its more sensual and mature without the overt language. If Prince was running around acting the same way he did in his twenties, he'd be really pathetic (for an example of how utterly horrible it would be, take a look at David Lee Roth. The guys older than dirt, but still tries to act like he's in his heyday). I'm glad P has decided to age gracefully.

I'm not so much advocating the return of the thong and stockings, rather the return of the ability to say what you want to say without fear of "sinning".

lol You are one in a million, dude.
Well, perhaps P might find that a little crass???
Just because you can say something doesn't always mean that you should. It's not about saying whatever you can get away with, or pushing people's buttons. P actually cares about his name now, and how he presents himself. I could use curse words around my dad (who is a former JW), but I don't do it simply out of respect. He also knows I'm a Christian, and I want to live up to that. I believe P wants to live up to his beliefs too. He hasn't been brainwashed like some believe, but he has changed his way of thinking. He doesn't find curse words to be respectful. Quite honestly, I don't think he ever found a lot of things he said and did in the past to be respectful. The biggest difference is that back in the day he didn't care. Now he cares.

What is crass about it? In that context, it's not rude, it's not said to tear someone down, it's not malicious.

Yeah.....you know how much disrespect his old music had. It turned so much of us into felons and the dregs of society right? This is a fake issue. It's born out of manipulation.

Back in the day he cared a whole hell of a lot, and looking at the messages in his music and the bold artistic, social, personal and human statements he made only proves that to be true.

Blind rhetoric.

The truth is there is, and would be, nothing wrong with Prince saying "she'll make you feel like your shit don't stink". Neither would there be anything wrong with him using "ass" in place of "butt" in a song chock full of brilliant points and social commentary....

My man, I'm not saying cussing is a death-from-above sin. All I'm saying is that as a true Christian, P carries himself a certain way now. When I said he didn't care in the past, I simply meant that for the most part he didn't care about offending anyone, or trying to follow bible principles. Now I know the bible doesn't list a commandment about "cussing" specifically, but it's the principles of what's outlined in the bible that P is trying to follow. It may not be in harmony with what others believe, but it's the way he believes God wants him to be.
