How far has he fallen from an honest lyrical approach when we're hoping to hear the word "ass"!?

I'm happy for him and nobody is a better showman/musician, but damn, things like this remind me of how brainwashed the man is.

He doesn't need to say 'ass' or any 'swear words' big-boy, I just mean its sad a religion is controlling his lyrics.

You completely miss the point.....

For me this has never been about the thrill of hearing a curse word. Rather, it has been about ideas and how to convey them, namely religious manipulations that caused Prince to feel guilty in the first place to stop using "curse" words.

If, and mind you I'm saying IF, Prince did use "ass" as a substitute for butt, as in cigarette butt, what would be wrong with that? Why would that be bad? Why is it a good thing for an artist to curb their use of words as a tool of expression, when they aren't using them in a bad way? That is the point in applauding his using a word that his religion deems offensive, especially when he's not using it in an offensive way.

He may not say things anymore like "I sincerely wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth" or "masturbating with a magazine" or "sexy muthafucker" but he is more subtle. He says things like "Love Jones is on TV and I wanna go down South" What do you think that means? oral Hmm.... I wonder? And there is other stuff on Musicology too, my mind is just failing me at the moment. lot's of sext stuff, just not as explicit or with the cuss words. I'm digging it!

Yeah, it's Ads. Never thought it was anything else, but....

And I don't care if this is immature but i want him to cuss. There, i've said it. hmph! I actively want him to be saying fuck, motherfucker, poo and ass.

I don't know why - it just feels right because i've listened to him swearing his tiny ass off for so long. Kinda like if you come home one day when you're small and you're growing up - and your folks have repainted the walls a nasty beige.
They've got every right to do that, but you're still pissed and secretly wish it was back how it was before: with fuck, poo, ass, bottom, tits and wonderful ass written all over the walls.

"But why do you feel the need for him to cuss, Frog? That's the question you need to ask yourself..." hmm

Well, because i'm used to it. And although i like change in almost every aspect of my life, i don't like change when it's boring as fuck. Which a total ban on swearing is; it's regressive. It just elevates swearing to something it shouldn't be - this terrible, terrible thing. It actually brings more fucking focus on the words than it would if everyone just got on an used the damn words. Sheesh.

I'm so glad I saw your post before I posted the exact same thang. Look: Prince IS a sexy motherfucker...

But now that he's on his 2nd marriage, he's 45, he's finally getting more recognition for his musicianship, and realizing (like most of us do as we grow) that we don't have to do such outrageous things. Plus my personal hope is that he's seen Ohio Players recently and caught Sugafoot (who is eleventy -- thanx Ralph from KROQ) tryin to look sexy...ewwwww.

Plus haven't we all been waiting for this? For Prince to show where he was gonna go? To show his brilliance? To wear bad-ass suits and lovely boots? That song "What U Want Me 2 Do"...it makes me want to cry with joy cuz he's showing the maturity of a man in love...again.

He changed some words in DMSR on 3/29, but it didn't bother me. And "Controversy" with "people call me rude..." OMG! No Lord's Prayer though and I was glad, cuz he left something out.

Prince doesn't need to do another Dirty Mind. His comments on the Today Show (especially when Tipper Gore and the PMRC went after him for Darlin' Nikki - the 1st song I got into "trouble" dancing too..got waaaay to into that guitar at a gangsta party in 1983-84) were such that he couldn't believe the trouble he got into for that song.

All I'm saying (in my babbling way) is that it's nice that Prince is growing enough to truly share his genius, and to be, at the moment, the only icon from the 80s (of Madonna, who's charging up to $300 for seat NPG members got for $85; Michael, who's just...Let's all pray for Mike) who's not on a one-hit wonder tour, who's not in rehab...it's finally paid off, Princesters...and he's STILL creating live music.

I NEVER agreed w/Sister, (but I agree with your right to write it. I'm in marketing too, and we all know that no publicity is bad publicity. Bob Hilburn wrote about Sister but if I remember correctly it took awhile for Right On to.

Thank U! Cuz cigarette ass means nothing! Plus this is a familiar refrain from many "ghetto" communities where you couldn't find a grocery store, but you could buy liquor and/or cigarettes on every block.

Plus, as he stated on the Tavis how, he's not trying to return to those days (and I thank him for that, even if his lovely cherry tomato bottom is in great shop) trying to be young when he's about to be 46 years old.

And you know what? I think that no matter what religion he was practicing (I believe it would be Christian), he understands that no one wants to see a 45 year old, no matter how good he looks, in a trench w/bikini briefs...and to' up hair. Prince's hair is WAAAAAY to whipped now for that mess.

Isn't it wonderful to be talking about a real live musician who's been here?

Oh no. I understand your point about the use of 'offensive language'. We CHOOSE to make these words offensive - the sounds coming out of our mouths are not inherently vile, so the whole issue is one of a collective illiusion. However, expressing ideas in a way that excludes those who choose to be offended, still limits the expression of the ideas. Prince chose to share his art with a broader audience and I have my doubts that this is a religious issue at all. It's really about the bank. Also, he's said over and over again that expressing yourself with offensive language has become so common that the effect it used to have in art is totally negated. He has never been 'common' and that is why he chooses to cultivate a wider following.

Right on.
Whether P curses or not, it's nothing to be up in arms about. It's his art, for him to do with what he chooses.
Orgers: curse on your own records, that is, if you can even make them.

Not sure. I don't think that people have ever looked at Prince as a paragon of virtue, not even now. Undoubtedly there are scads of fans who are attending these shows that totally lost touch with what Prince is doing in his personal life so I'm not sure that the non-cussing is helping him to reach out to a wider audience.

I like the discussion this thread spawned biggrin

Well, Musicology is a family show, so obviously that means people can bring their kids which means more tickets sold, perhaps more cds purchased.
I can see how people might think that this is being done primarily for $$.
This is not the case. I don't believe that Prince is doing away with offensive language just to make a buck. I agree with you to a point Supa, I do believe that P's Christian beliefs are a big reason why he's not cursing. But I don't see anything wrong with that. No genre of music really needs cursing in order to get a point across.
