Prince's acceptance speech

"A real friend and mentor is not on the payroll"

At least we now know why Larry left the band, he wasn't getting paid.
RIP sad

Luckily, Prince was able to give a coherent and reasonable speech. Unfortunately, the same can not be said of OutKast. You know, if you are about to induct a childhood hero, a musical genius and a living legend...have a goddamn speech written. Those two chuckleheads - Andre 3000 and Big Boy - got up there and sounded like a couple of real stooges. They rambled and mumbled their way through their "speeches" and essentially came off like a couple of unprepared children. Whose fucking idea was it to get them while Lenny Kravitz was 10 feet away!?!? At least he can put a sentence together. Alicia as OK, and looked like a PBS announcer next to those two losers, but how did she get the gig? There are other performers who have actually had a career that has been longer than TWO albums that could have done a better job and been more meaningful for Prince, I think.

a certain guy once said: "it's all about the music". of course it's about that YHWH guy as well nowadays, but still...

if musicology turns out to be anything like as good as the love below/speakerboxxx then I for 1 will be pleasantly surprised. and maybe then you can complain that they are inarticulate.

Amen to that brother. You know even my Dad said the same thing. Why the hell them and not Lenny Kravitz, or even Jay Z he is a big Prince fan but really Lenny should have been up there in some way shape or form. To me they showed Prince and the RRHOF no respect. I don't want to bag on them too hard cause I like them but that was really terrible.

Was a fair list! Jehovah is written in a few places in my Grandads old King James bible. Wether people recognise it or not, it does not make it an any less valid name for god.

BTW, I am not a witness!

Ooooo... i'm trying not to blow the f up..

'..The most petty attempts to claim superiority are often to belittle one's use of language in lieu of what one says...'

To divert my anger, let me just say this. Andre3000 and Big Boi are the first members of the hip hop community to actually take their Prince influence and infuse the music with a touch of that vibe most of us have appreciated for the past 20 some years from P himself. "Hey Ya" is a historic moment in the development of hip hop, much the way Lauryn Hill's successes were. Prince clearly inspired Andre to be so progressive and potentially map a course for the future (..3000?) that is less predictable and constrained, more inventive and musically rich. I sense from the way you wrote your comment that you're not particularly conversant in hip hop... your loss.

What do you expect from people who call themselves Elvis Costello, or Ringo Starr? Gee, if Dre and Big Boi could only be as eloquent as Keith Richards... Please...check yourself next time and leave your petty biases at the door. disbelief

Keith Richards and Kid Rock were JUST AS ignorant as Andre3000 and Big Boi.
Don't front, all 4 showed a lack of judgement.
Why the hostility??? Your comments could be used by David Chapelle on

Revolution, thanks for hearing me.

I have NOTHING against OutKast's music. I like it. But, your point supports mine so beautifully: it doesn't matter who you are, you are represented by your words and that night their's were lacking. Preparation is everything in situations like these...although Kid Rock was "prepared" and he still stunk up the room.

"When Keeping It Real Goes Bad"! Classic, Revolution, classic!

sales? I just meant that at the moment Outkast can at least point to the quality and diversity of their music to speak to them. And going on current form Prince has NEWS doing his speaking! If it's all about the music then I would say that (at the moment) Outkast have a lot more to say.

But isn't the point of the night the inductee and NOT the inductors? I just watched the show again last night and cringed my way through their "speech". For a band that has "a lot more to say" they could barely get a coherent thought across. Sorry, but its all on tape and no matter how much justfication is attempted, they blew it.

Wow, where did that rant come from? omg I was just saying they got silly names, is there any debate on that point? How does my reference to silly names show any lack of conversance in hip hop? I got plenty in my CD collection along with rock, pop, regae, blues, jazz and classical.

What I think of how an artist articulates in public has no bearing on how I admire them as musicians. If it did, I sure as hell wouldn't have any Prince stuff in my collection.

I knew before it was all over with that someone would have something negative to say about Outkast. Personally, I wouldn't have cared if Mickey Mouse had inducted him in as long as I got a couple good performances out of it. All I have to say to all the whiners and crybabies is:

I didn't think of it at the time. He should have thanked his band members.

He should have thanked his fans, or "fams" as he doesn't want us to be fanatics.

Which none of us in here are.

But some people devote way too much of there time thinking, talking about , and listening to his music.

Front? never. The Chappelle line made me laugh, but the hostility comes from reading so many posts about how inarticulate and 'ignorant' Outkast were. This post added that they had "silly" names. Their names are pretty standard as far as hip hop goes, so to say that what you hated about their speeches is somehow linked to the way they name themselves is assinine to me. Keith Richards and Kid Rock were staying true to themselves/their images. I ain't mad when Richards gets up there and does what he does... so I don't understand the controversy over Dre and BigBoi.

If people would prefer the speeches to come off like liner notes to a box set, then suggest that music journalists and sociology professors do them instead. We should expect Alicia Keys, having come up playing piano, to explain her connection to P's music differently than Outkast. I can't BEGIN to count the number of times I've heard guys say what Outkast (esp. Andre) said about Prince and how they got into his music. If you're gonna say the average person is ignorant, then say that...but don't act like these two guys are remarkably uneducated inarticulate fools who shouldn't have been there. zipped

I think Prince picked his presenters to kind of a "pass the torch" so to speak. I actually liked what Dre said and I felt it was honest, heartfelt and articulate. Big Boi's speech though heartfelt as well, left me cringing..."I think Prince said the "F" word in Erotic City".....Yikes!! Alicia....she was articulate, but I personally found her speech nausiatingly pretentious and I'm still trying to figure out what the hell she was talking about. Hindsight being 20/20, these would have been better choices, just my opinion:

Jimmy Jam/ Terry Lewis
Lenny Kravitz
Sheila E.
Chuck D.
Chaka Kahn
Larry Graham (don't gag people, he is a music legend and he did innovate the the slap or thumping method of bass playing)
Chris Rock
Patty Labelle
