Ok, folks, I have to confess: "Illusion, Coma, Pim & Circumstance" is the hottest funk shit P had done in years.

The title yet was promissing, but the song itself made my day. I'm gonna sweat this one out!

Sorry Crystal, but for me that song is waaaayy to close to the sound of the New Power Soul/Rave sessions (my least favorite Prince era) I thought he was slippin into oblivion again when I played that one. For some reason I can't get the voice of Lil' Louie Vega's Mambo # 5 outta my head when i hear it. In its favor, it's a kick ass song title. I just wish somebody would pull a Shockadelica on him and give it the music and lyrics a title like that deserves.

i like the cut mostly for the lyrix (kinna humorous in parts), 'cept for the attempts of soundin, i dunno, "hip"...chips n'whips? th' fuck, i'm 23 years old and i don't even use that slang! it's just...awkward. like, "you don't need to resort to current vernacular, brotha. you're cool just the way you are."

I am totally into this song! The best way to hear it is to sit yourself in between both speakers and kick the volume up high-- there's no way to keep from digging in.

Being current is not the problem, we want him to progress, to do original, new sounding stuff. What we want though is good stuff. He used rap slang on Days Of Wild, and that song is a monster, and is original and innovating.

Prince should listen to Andre3000 and take notes.

shrug I don't know. Unless, maybe it's the programming in this one. To me Prince sounds better with one of two options: Linn Drum or a Live Drum Kit. Otherwise, I feel the ghost of Kirky J. in this song.

for gods sake stop comparing these trax to old stuff. Sure, the old stuff is great but try to listen to the new trax with an open mind. Prince in 2004 is a different person to who he was in 1987!!!

Look nancyboy, I'm not complaining. That track just ain't my cup o' tea. It doesn't ruin the entire album for me. In my opinion, Prince resurrected himself musically with The Rainbow Children and musically, ICPC sounds like he's regressin' a lil. You know how Poom Poom was just a funny lil track not intended for any album but just to make a female laugh? That's what this one sounds like to me: A NPS/Rave era outtake that sounds kinda outta place on this album.

The problem is that a lot of this album SOUNDS like older material. A Million Miles (which I think is great), Call My Name, etc... are easily traceable to previous tracks, imo. It's like there's a big box that says "Prince song parts" on it and P decided to reach into it to grab some things without really adding a whole lot new. smile That's okay, though.... this album is basic Prince music and that's fine but I just don't see that Prince has grown much 'on record' since prince and TGE. I never listened to TGE and thought "Gee, this all sounds like previous music." Musicology might as well be a bootleg of unknown prince out-takes. Which is fine again cuz that's my favorite album. smile

I'm lovin' it. Played it at home over the PC, which obviously ain't the best, but I was tryin' to work and play at the same time. Took it to my car, which still ain't the best I've got, but that bass floored me! Was dancin' in the driver's seat and pulled up next to a cop at a red light. He looked over at me like he thought I was crazy. I was stupid enough to just smile, wave and keep right on groovin'.

Maybe that's why he dropped behind me and followed me for the next couple blocks? lol

This song kicks major ass. If you gave Kirky J a mllenium he'd never be able to program a song as funky as this.

Whips & Chips current vernacular? lol

I love the timing of his phrases and the offkey way he sings, almost as if he originally laid out the the music in a different key. It works tho. If we're gonna talk regression, this sounds to me like what he wanted to do with "Undisputed" from Rave but this time it really worked nod

Cracking up at the lyrics....

He never spoke about her nose, so prominent because
In the dark it glows, if she was only tan instead of solily white.
Her name was doris but he called her flo as in.....

Well, I didn't hate everything from those eras either...musically it sort of reminds me of Strange But True, which I LOOOOOVE -- except with even better lyrics and the tightest vocals I've heard in a Prince song since...I dunno, Irresistible Bitch? wink I just LOOOVE this song.

Great song. I keep listening to it over and over along with the outro to Musicology where there are little samples of old Prince songs. Musicology to me is an album with pretty much no filler. I love that most the songs are upbeat and not too many ballads.
