Prince should listen to Andre3000 and take notes. After Andre writes about 5000 killer songs, mounts 20 tours, and learns to actually sing beyond affectations in Prince-derivative "novelty songs" that will have a shelf life of a year, then Prince and he can begin talking. Puhleeze. Prince created the blueprint for the slow-funk jam, the cross-over R&B/rock/pop album, the silly seque, and everything else Outkast has been stealing from to build a career. Whips & Chips current vernacular? I love the timing of his phrases and the offkey way he sings, almost as if he originally laid out the the music in a different key. It works tho. If we're gonna talk regression, this sounds to me like what he wanted to do with "Undisputed" from Rave but this time it really worked 100% absolutely spot on! Could not have said it better myself. Anpther time he hit this nail on the head is when he says, "put that spoon down honey, c'mon let mamma feed U." too smooth...

Chips and whips = money and bdsm toys. I say his usage was warranted for the point he was making, and not about "trying" to be hip. Besides, except for that whole Tony M. thing that I'd rather not discuss , Prince has never had to "try and be hip". It does come naturally for some people.

I have to agree, but is there enough bass in the song? The drums need to be louder so the song can bump in my car, which I've yet to do..so I can't really complain, can I? Amazing that what some see as the best track on the album is among the worst to others. I think ICPC is god awful as is CG and LOTP. If not for those tracks the album would have a much better flow. To each his own. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Well, add another vote for the "love it" category. Best song on the album, hands down. It has that funky, just plain weird, Prince feel. To the folks comparing it to NPS, well, I think this was the sound he was trying for on that disc, but just couldn't seem to get down. To me, the only song on the disc that sounds like that era is "Life O The Party", but even that one is bolstered by a thumpin drum line, which NPS was sorely lacking. I've said for ages that that album would have been sooo much better had it just had better drums. (Imagine if " Like Funky Music" had a drum sound like LOTP does!) I digress.
This song just kicks all kinds of booty! The sparse drum sound, coupled with the crazy, whacked-out vocals make for an incredibly funky sound. Prince downplays the bass sound, which gives this a sound completely unlike anything on the radio today (which is what P did back in the day with "When Doves Cry", but here he is using this technique to a completely different effect). Lyrically, this song reminds me of the sheer bizzareness (I'm sure this isn't a word, but y'all understand) of tunes from SOTT/Black Album/Lovesexy. "Shockadelica", "Rock Hard In A Funky Place" and other "Camille" tracks are very much in this same vein. What makes it great is that P is building on the sound of those songs, but doing something new with it. He isn't just doing the same stuff he did back then. This song alone is worth the whole album!!! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Ok, so maybe I'm the only one that spends that kind of money on my "toys". The point still is Prince doesn't have to "try" and be hip, cool, funky, fine or anything else. He was born that way.

No u don't...keep groovin and the lyrics will come. I heard about this track and thought, oh hear he goes again tryin to be cute...there was a time that, like all of us, he was stuck in that inbetween stage of growing and staying a cad. As long as the track does it...the lyrics will always come. Speaking of that: anybody got the lyrics?
