Prince 'Greatest Gainer' on Billboard Catalog Chart

http://www.billboard.com/...popcat.jsp

"The Very Best of Prince" is the 'Greatest Gainer' on this week's Pop Catalog album chart, soaring from no.15 last week to no.2 this week. All the press lately is beginning to translate into album sales. Hopefully he can move some copies of Musicology as well!

Notice Bob Seger and The Beatles were up there too. Looks like we weren't the only ones watching the RRHOF. wink

An artist's catalog is their "old" albums. So Prince's catalog is every album of his before the current one.

Looks like a ranking of "Greatest Hits" and "Best Of" compilations to me.

Which makes sense, if you consider it. A fan of an older musician who is interested in owning all the albums probably already has them. Newer fans who are now buying their music are, for the most part, probably interested in checking out the "Greatest Hits" if anything.

It's not only "best of" or greatest hits"...

"Catalog albums are 2-year-old titles that have fallen below No. 100 on The Billboard 200 or reissues of older albums. Weeks On Chart column reflects combined weeks title has appeared on The Billboard 200 and Top Pop Catalog Albums. "

also for anyone else interested in reading more into the chart, the cirlcles next to an album means it has sold more than 500,000 copies and gone "gold"

a triangle means it has sold over 1 million and gone platinum.. if there is a number next to the triangle that is how many millions it has sold, or how many times platinum the record wnet platinum.

incase anyone cares.

No it doesn't. When an album is certified Gold (500,000+), Platinum (1 million+), Multi-Platinum (2 million+) or Diamond (10 million+), it means that that recording has shipped that amount of copies and not necessarily sold that many copies.

the RRHOF show was first broadcast sunday night, the chart runs through Monday's sales, so that jump is based on one day of impact from the broadcast. Of course, there was coverage of the induction last week.
