Words can't describe... you just have to see it. It was defenitely one of his best solos, captured on camera. He schooled everyone on how to play a guitar.

Well, it wasn't earth shattering in terms of Prince just being Prince - we already know he's awesome. I think it's special b/c not onlly was it TIGHT but it was in front of that particular crowd & he brought them to their knees. He looked great, killed it, threw the guitar in the air & left - classic shit. It's just nice to see him so respected by his peers. Let's face it, the public forgets how incredible he is & this performance was a thunderous reminder. nod
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

1 part really solid, though mostly conventional guitar playing + 2 parts exhuberant fandom = the hype you've heard about this solo.

It was good, very emotionally played, but not without a wrong note or two (which is normal) or Prince hamming it up for the crowd and camera.

If anything, it was a study in contrasts between his histrionic solo and the earlier, standard one offered by another guitarist in the band.

July

During a commercial break Dhani, George Harrison's son was asking where was Prince.
He wanted to give him a hug.

Prince was touched and obviously had respect for George Harrison and was well aware of the fact that Dhani Harrison had lost his father. Prince played with abandon and with a lot of emotion.

That was the the most powerful moment of the night. Good for you.
It was perfect and message sent and received. thumbs up! guitar

It was GOOD, but I wouldn't say it was the mind blowing experience that, say, the end of "Lets Go Crazy" had when you saw it up on the big screen, (IF you got that chance). This was a great solo, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the greatest guitar performance ever. Let's not sell Hendrix' "Machine Gun" down the river so easily...

but you could be right - it well could be the best one you've ever seen. I'm a guitar player, I've seen tons.

I agree it was good, but it is obvious you haven't seen Prince do alot of guitar solos. When he really wants to channel that guitar spirit he can/and does. It's just that sooo many of his recent television appearances have just been O.K. that when he steps up finally you all freak. I thought the solo (his perfomance thereof) was in poor taste. The tribute was to George Harrison, not the Prince show. I thought it was really poor of him to walk to the front of the stage and proceed to lie back on one of his bodyguards (who held him while he played.) This is fine and dandy, but do it during your performance/tribute not someone else's. Then I also found it disrespectful to the other inductees when he just threw his guitar into the audience and walks off just as the last note is being played. Again, this is not your show (Prince.) He talks all of this Jehovah stuff, but would Jehovah have approved of his old egocentric ways...I think not...as usual Prince contridicts himself.

Now that I've also watched it I have to say his stage antics weres a bit tacky, to be completely honest. And funnily enough, he looked like Andy McCoy from Hanoi Rocks writhing around in his, let's just say, not-quite-tasteful clothing.

Not necessarily a bad thing, definitely entertaining.

I'm sitting hear reading some people who seem to be downplaying the performance and am amazed. I assume you have more than a passing interest in Prince if you read this site. If so, I find it impossible to believe you were not as impressed most of us were with this performance. It's sad for these downplayers, Prince is like a drug to them. They hate him/or dislike most of what he does these days but can't seem to stay away from reading/posting or taking time out in their busy lives to watch him.

I for one loved it. I too was not sure if it was appropriate for him to completely destroy everyone else during a tribute but these Awards shows are b.s. anyway. Princee having been in the industry for 25 years knows that more than any of us listeners. He's doing what has to be done. He's showqing up at very high profile events and is 'wowing' the hell out of everyone. He's not pulling out his body parts to gain the attention. He's showing his skills and unmatched showmanship.

I love it and i can't wait to watch it again!

It's an outstanding solo, IMHO.

He does kinda take away from everyone else, but I'm not sure that's a problem - you ask prince to do a solo and frankly, that's what you're gonna get - and Dhani seemed to be really chuffed that his old man was getting such treatment.

That's some bullshit, I can tell you. Prince's music has been a big part of my life for over ten years and the fact that I can still be critical of him is just a sign of having some self-control over my enthusiasm towards his artistic output and Prince Rogers Nelson as a person. Whenever he shows poor judgement (and let's face it, he's been doing that all through his career) I tend to note it.

It isn't sad. It's what adults are like.

Isn't it incredible? "It wasn't earth shattering in terms of Prince just being Prince." He was amazing and he didn't even fully turn it out. IMHO Prince always has been and always will be the total package. Even if he, himself, tries to limit it to "it being all about the music."

How many times do I have to say, "it was good," for you to see that I'm not downplaying the solo? I've been playing guitar for 19 years. I'm blessed to be able to get paid to do it. So, if you will, I know a thing or two about playing solos.

When I say Prince played a good, solid solo, that's how I feel. Was it an exciting performance at a huge event? Yes. But, some of us are able to distinguish between a great performance and a mindblowing guitar solo.

I never said Prince isn't capable of mindblowing solos -- he is. While I particularly liked his open-string trickery near the start of the "...Gently Weeps" solo, the rest I found to be conventional playing. Very emotional, yes -- which is even more important than technique -- but rather conventional.

As far as being a fan but posting comments that fail to live up to your litmus test for enthusiasm, get a grip, pal. It's called diversity of thought on a fan site.

I am a huge fan of George Harrison and, of course, Prince. P's solo last night, I think, was the best tribute to Harrison I have seen in the past year since his death. I didn't see it as Prince trying to ham it up and take away any respect from Harrison...he played one of his best solo's ever on one of Harrison's best songs, surrounded by Harrison's friends and son. For me, it was one of my musical hero's playing his heart out on one of my other hero's most beautiful songs. Plain and simple...the performance ROCKED!

Nice post. A tempered view. Very cool solo, let's make no bones about it. Very, very cool, and very arrogant. Perfect for what he's doing now, to remind people how good he is. But, let's not get carried away, and we don't even have to compare Prince to others here. Prince can do this. We've seen it before. More of it would be welcome, of course.

Prince does this, this is what he does.

The RRHOF ceremony is a LONG, BORING affair with too little performing and way too much ceremony and good taste for its own good. The audience was not offended, but THRILLED to have a good excuse to get off their butts.

Same here, Joy, I can't believe some people are bitching about Prince's performance last night. disbelief

Personally, I think that the reason why Prince was allowed to do that great guitar solo was because he had just gotten in the the Hall of Fame himself. Perhaps that's not the reason why, but that was kind of my take on it. The other musicians didn't seem offended at all when Prince was up on stage doing his thing. Truth be told, I think they enjoyed it as much as he did, especially George's son Dhani, who had a HUGE grin on his face.

The part that was funny was the way Prince strutted off the stage after he threw his guitar up into the air. When I saw the guitar get tossed, I was hoping that it wouldn't fall onto the stage and get broken. lol I'm sure Prince had a bodyguard or a sound tech nearby to catch it.

That performance was super, and I can't wait to watch it again. dancing jig woot! dancing jig

Like most proficient and even virtuosic musicians, you look at it from a perspective that's too technical. I agree fans are going overboard comparing this performance to Hendrix at Woodstock, but it was probably a bit better than "good" if the emotional came out of the conventional. Honestly, who out there has been a consistently unconventional guitar player over two decades? Whatever they start becomes their convention if it wasn't borrowed ten times over.

Prince did what he does well terrifically, and fans are just happy with that.

I totally agree with you on that. He should have done all of that during his performance. I think he played a lot better on this song than he did on let's go crazy. he does contradict himself a lot, but you can't expect him to change completely overnight. I also noticed that he's using that gun mike again. wonder what that's all about?

While I respect your opinion, I strongly disagree. It's common sense, if you invite a guy like Prince, a colorful, outstanding lead guitarist to join a band in an arrangement of any song, you would expect that he would "do his thing". It's like having Michael Jordan at an all-star game and criticizing him for taking too many shots. That's what he is there for, not to sit back and play ryth guitar. Also, it certainly appeared that George Harrison's son could barely control himself during the performance (he was smiling from ear to ear during Prince's solo) as well as Tom Petty. Tom Petty certainly appeared to be enjoying the solo as he and Prince smiled at each other throughout the performance. Anyway, I thought that Prince did his thing without trying to show anyone up. He was doing his thing and everyone appeared to enjoy it.
