Just like in a galaxy far far away, in this world there are clonetroopers and there are Jedi Knights. Prince , in essence, is like a Jedi Knight - the last of a dying breed of spiritual warriors who thinks for themselves. He is trying to pass on what he has learned. If Obiwan Kenobi and Yoda didn't pass on their knowledge to Luke, the galaxy would be doomed. Prince is trying to pass on his musicianship so the music world doesn't suffer. GEEK! 
If Prince is, as you see him, "A jedi knight",...what ULTIMATELY happened to the JEDIS? They got their asses kicked! Is "Yoda" James Brown? Is Obi-Wan Larry Graham? The Jedi don't "think for themselves"! They're totally diciplined (part of what makes those new flicks so boring)- the only Jedi who thought for himself was Anakin, therefore by your logic, Prince is Anakin Skywalker! Anakin kills his wife accidently and gets burned to a crisp by Obi-Wan.... Therefore, Prince will destroy his marrige, get burned by Larry Graham after a falling out, and turn to the dark side/Banished ones in the Death Star/Digital Garden? Is "Musicology" the secret plans? I think you may have something!  | |

He has passed it on just by being who he is. I wouldn't have learned piano or songwriting or singing, or producing or doing it all myself if it weren't for him. He has had a huge, subtle impact on the music world at large. And by the way, I grew up in a home where music was not encouraged at all, it took a lot of work and inspiration to do these things. | |

So I guess Stevie Wonder and Sly Stone are no longer Genius because they are past their 70's peaks. Following the rules of your opinion, Paul McCartney is worthless today because most of his great work was with the Beatles in the 1960s. Attitudes like this are laughable. There is no such thing as a used to be genius. Genius always is and always will be. Just because u don't dig it anymore doesn't mean agrees with your perspective. And if there is a such thing as a "former genius" , I guess it is better to be a has been than a never was, like so many of us wasting time complaining on these message boards. Prince will be remembered as a genius as will all of the genius musicians that came before him. Every genius has their day, Prince had his and has earned a place in the music history. Atleast he will be remembered for something other than having an opinion. | |

Thanx for the post. I don't think he does preach--remember Gold: "Step aside and make a way..." etc. Where does he preach/teach? A job to do? Yes, he has got that, but preaching? Remember "Family Name".like Jack Nicholson has been quoted saying "I don't like advice. Unless I'm giving it". the same is true for millions of people. they are immediately turned off when they feel they are being "schooled" per se. and Prince's statement about Musicology and getting "back to the music" has to be really insulting to alot of artists out there and those artists' FANS . . . there are many bands that work very hard at their craft . . . why is Prince just focusing on Hip-Hop and a small group of Pop artists that use technology for their music? it's kinda ridiculous . . . i think it's great that there IS diversity. Live Musicianship is great and very hard work - but i think if there wasn't any computer generated music, the live stuff would just get monotonous. Variety is the spice of life . . . and i say the fabricators only make the real deals (like Prince) look better in the long run!! i just wish he'd stop whining - teaching - preaching about it. we've heard you!!! there has got to be something else . . .or maybe not - maybe that's the only thing that drives him these, those and any further days . . . i do adore Prince, i truly adore him . . . i just want to truly enjoy him again . . . without all the messages . . . i can think for myself. --------

Yes, supposedly he kept hearing he was a genius so much he actually started to believe it. And he very well may have been a musical genius, but I heard Hypno Paradise for the first time a couple of days ago and I was appalled at how godawful it was. Of course Prince will just assume that there's something wrong with me for not getting the genius behind Hypno Paradise.
Yup, I'm sure he believes he is the right one to teach the world how to play real music.  u know after reading your posts for a while i've come to the conclusion that u may have taken EWM's place as the most obnoxious orger. If u have so many problems with prince why do u continue to come here? Just to annoy the rest of us? Can't u just let go and find somewhere to be positive, instead of putting Prince down. On the other hand, why can't some people accept that you can be a fan of Prince and still be critical? Just because I love his music doesn't mean I have to accept every thought, word and note that issues from his direction as the received gospel. It's called thinking for yourself. I think you're not giving enough credit to Lando Calrissian- HE toppled the Empire, by allowing Leia & Chewie to escape Cloud City, then taking control of the Falcon and destroying the Death Star! There was no "re-birth of the Jedi", just a lone psudo-Jedi: Luke. The Jedi never returned! The rebels just partied with the cool Ewoks, and the universe was free! Lando Calrissian is clearly Morris Day! Yoda is James Brown, and Ben is Larry Graham! Prince is Anakin Skywalker...Luke will be the offspring of Prince who will restore Prince's legacy, vault & catalog to supremacy! It's so CLEAR! Prince has always been a preacher/teacher, thats what makes him great. Thats what creates the the continued "Controvery!"
When Prince said "White, black, porta rican, everbody's just afreak'n" That was preach'n! Many racist didnt like it! When prince came along with the whole androgenous thing! He may/may not be gay..but it created a symbol of a unisex, multiracial society that alot of people longed for and desired. Thats was a strong social statement, many bible thumpers and parents didnt like it! I'm trying to move you to think! For years when people dissed YOUR/MY belief system, growing up, we thought they were so closed minded.....Dogmatic Dictators! Prince helped many to fell normal understaood and liberated. They love him to this day for that...Including You I bet! Now that same person has matured his message, and as soon as he says something you dont agree with you morph into the closed minded mindset you use to hate! You dont have to agree with everything he says, but atleast be openminded enough to give him the freedom, to express it. Debating a view/opinion if fine and should be done. But to try to suppress his view/opinion to teach others makes you exactly what you "Used to hate." Music is in a sad state, many art forms are in danger of becoming extinct. Guitar, Piano, Drum playing. Along with quality songwritting and craftmanship. Should we stop saving endangered animal species? Stop breeding Doctors, Lawers Etc...? Quality muscians are no different, cause no matter what you do for a living, at then end of the day, we all do the same thing, pop in that great cd to destress and take us away. Many of us would lose our sanity without that. You may not have a person in the world who understand you, but there is a song out there thats makes you feel like someone does! Great music is more valuable than many people are willing to express. We need great musicians and great music! Without it many of us would not be who we are today and without it many of our children wont be all they can be tomorrow! Prince do yo thang baby...just like you always have! And as always some will love it and some will hate it....Why I'll never know?  | |

You said it yourself. They are considered geniuses. ... for their past work. So, yes, in my opinion there is such a thing as "former genius and musical innovator" and "being past their prime". FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!
