Prince and the LoVeSeXy album cover

So like every night I bring a Prince CD to work. So tonight I brought the Lovesexy CD. Everyone as always ask "What album this time?" So I show everyone the cover and they freak out!! 1st comment was "See I told you he was a fag". 2nd. comment "What the hell is wrong with you?" When you purchased Lovesexy back in the day, how much shit did you get?

I used to get off on those reactions when I was a kid in school.

I loved it when people thought I was crazy because I was into Prince.

Some old prude cunt bitch wouldn't sell it to me cos I was too young so I had to get my mother and have her get it for me...

I was 16 and working at a wrecka stow when LOVESEXY came out. I was a fan of some of Prince's music (DOVES, CORVETTE, 1999, RASPBERRY etc.) but not the artist himself. I was an Iron Maiden and AC/DC sort of guy. But we had to put up a big display of LOVESEXY right in the front of the store... it made me uncomfortable. Then we also had to play the album on the store stereo all the time! It creeped me out. At first. Then one day when I was closing up and no one else was around I heard, really HEARD ANASTESIA. It blew my mind. I started listening to the album closer. I suddenly got it. I didn't care about the cover (or any of his other homo-erotic overtones) anymore. It got through to me and I understood what it was about and what he was saying. It spoke to me.

I've been a huge fan ever since.

Prince forced many people to face things, to be uncomfortable. In so doing he opened up our minds and hearts to many wonderful things, not just his music. I'm sure I would have evolved beyond heavy metal eventually. But Prince's LOVESEXY (and also Suzanne Vega's SOLITUDE STANDING album) really jump started the proccess.

He is the biggest influence in my music to this day. And while I knew of him and dug the previous singles it wasn't until LOVESEXY that I really got into him.

LOVESEXY is my favorite album.

I remember there being a huge uproar with shops promoting the album because they deemed the artwork to sexually suggestive. Especially the bit of the flower shaped like a phallic object!!!!!

They wouldn't put posters up in the window etc!!!!! MOst of the shops I knew (not the regular record stores)..u know second hand record stores etc, were more interested in THE BLACK ALBUM at the time. I was only a very young kid but I distinctly remember all the bootlegs of THE BLACK ALBUM and most notably the LP with green/luminous yellow sticker which also included the unreleased PARADE outtakes IN ALL MY DREAMS & OLD FRIENDS 4 SALE.

My Mum wouldn't let me get LOVESEXY at first cos I was only about 8-9 years old at the time and she thought it looked too 'adult'. LOL!!!!! lol

However, wierdly enough, she let me get the bootleg LP of THE BLACK ALBUM which is much more explicit in content than LOVESEXY but I guess she didn't think it was from just the plain black cover!! lol

Anyway, I love the LOVESEXY album and I think the cover is beautiful!!!!! I've got a bootleg Live version of it on double 2-LP called LIVESEXY which is cool too and a bootleg CD which includes 1 extra unreleased track YES!! I prefer to listen to this version cos the tracks aren't all joined together and are easier to access!!!!!

Only time I got shit for it was when I was in line for the concert tix. I was about 18 at the time…and a few teenagers were making fun of me as I was like this wee white boy in line…probably the only one. They asked me if I liked a guys that pose nude on album covers…or something like that. I was embarrassed and didn’t know how to answer. I was struggling with my sexuality at the time (tho I didn’t know it)…but P nor Lovesexy had anything to do with that. Here I was in line with people who loved Prince and we are just waiting and listening to his music and these kids came out of nowhere and just ruined the mood. A few older ladies spoke up for me and told them to leave me alone and go away.

Whoever they were…thanks for sticking up for a white boy who listened to Prince.

I got tha same reaction:

1. Prince is a fag...
2. ...and since I listen to Prince I must be a fag too

I was only 12 at the time but really didn't care what the fuck anyone else thought of me or Prince. Still don't. He is a God and if people are too farsighted to see that and judge him by his album cover then fuck the lot of them! Lovesexy is my favorite album cover.

I was in high school when Lovesexy came out. A lot of the black kids at the school, like me, bought Prince records and he was still "hot" at that time, but many of my other friends didn't dig him as much.

But I never had to worry about getting harassed or questioned about my sexuality.

Let's face it, y'all, the cover is embarrassing. The best thing to do is flip the CD cover to the outside. If you're gonna take the album to the office, it's not advisable to take a CD with a picture of a naked man on it, albeit a naked musical genius.

I used to get shit too about that cover .
Infact I was one of only 3 hardcore Prince fans in my entire Town ...

What were the rumours floating around years back regarding the front cover and Prince's head being reduced so it would look more in proportion to the rest of his body ..anyone remember that load of cack..?

Don't ever let anyone else's opinions cloud ur judgement or freedom. If u wanna listen to a CD with a naked imp on the cover then do so. Fuck the ability to conform!!!!!

FREAKY!!!!! eek I remember reading something once about Prince having a genetic disorder where his head is slightly large for his body (or something to that effect) but don't remember anything about them reducing his head for the cover of LOVESEXY!!!!! That's so funny!!!!! lol
