Call My Name = Untitled Neo-Soul Rehash

What the duck. Call My Name sounds like Untitled by Dangelo. Musicoloy sounds like James Brown. I guess Musicology is Prince's attempt at sounding like his inspirations.

Ironically, Untitled sounds like everything from Do Me Baby to Insatiable.

John Fogerty (formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival) was taken to court -- sued for sounding too much like himself. True story. He won, obviously. What a ridiculous lawsuit . . . I mean, how can you sue someone for a signature sound?

As far a D'Angelo, he's inspired BY Prince. Therefore, Prince cannot be accused of biting off D'Angelo. It doesn't work that way. When I heard "Untitled", I immediately thought it was a Prince ripoff.

NOW, as far as the James Brown -- I agree that Prince is biting off James. It was cool a few times, with The Work and Prettyman, but this is one time too many (IMO).

"Call My Name" had me making faces, its chords were so sweet. And, I've yet to hear D'angelo sing about a wife. I'm all for calling spades, but this song sounds really good (from what I heard on that snippet).

The snippet of this song is played during the radio show interview that is mentioned on the frontpage of this site. Look for the story about Prince being interviewed by Doug, CoCo, etc...

BIG dissappointment.

Dreary rubbish, that's been done a thousand times before. Prince really IS treading water lately here isn't he - nothing from Musicology I've heard so far sounds to me like Prince is about to release a great record.

This track sounds like a cross of HCUDCMA, Adore and Insatiable - all wrapped up with the schmaltzy puke-inducing tediousness of Emancipation Disc II. I suppose at least there's a melody (even though he's used it before).

Add that to the tiresome non-funk James Brown snooze-pastiche of Musicology, and the uber-tuneless Reflection, and it looks like the new album is gonna be another big dust collector on my shelves.

Oh well, I guess I just like keeping up with what Prince is doing, I dunno why I keep expecting him to release anything truly magical again, there are enough artists out there still doing that to keep that side of me entertained.

Hell, if he's going to give us re-hash, he may as well put Sex Me, Sex Me Not on the album, along with Supercute. Those are pretty hot, I think. I have to admit, though, that I did like West, so I'm already pre-disposed to having a positive view of Call My Name. It'll be interesting to hear the whole track.

I agree with most of that - it sounded so much like various things already done that fans are running round like crazy finding songs it sounds like! I would prefer to see Prince do something new and experimental - that wasn't jazz.

I'd like to hear Prince do something that kicks ass - but this album is sounding pretty weedy from what I've heard so far - entertaining, but in a weedy way... soulful ballads just don't do it for me and Prince has done them to death.

Ditto. nod

I'd take Musicology (the song) over this anyday. Then again, that was only my first hearing of a snippet of Call my Name. But it just sounded...well, boring.

D'Angelo sing about a wife?? Huh? Whaddaya mean? I don't see why he would if he's never been married and only officially released 2 albums so far. I mean, I completely agree that it was Prince who influenced D'Angelo and not the other way around (this is a fucking no-brainer), but your statement baffles me.

We are thinking. We are thinking that the neo-soul people are influnenced by Prince and Prince is just recording the RnB music he started his carreer out with.

Prince is getting the respect he deserves from his peers and fans. Some of the haters on this site just can't stand it.

He did his artistic thing with TRC and News. Now it is time to do something for the masses.

hahaha, if you cant hear that TRC was inspired by the sound of neo soul (it did not sound like either for you or the prince album), then you probably thought prince invented rap on his own and it just coincidentally was the same as hip hop at the time. yeahhhhh, youre right, prince doesnt get inspired by anyone, acknowledge me doesnt sound like an LA and babyface song, only prince is his own muse! uh-huh!

I just don't get the people round here. we ALL know how Prince music works, the tracks we hate the 1st time out often end up being our faves, the tracks we love from the get-go often burn-out, yadda yadda. We have a 1.5 minute CRAP QUALITY sample of a new song and people are rushing once again to declare the death of Prince. Get a grip people! I kinda liked what I heard of "Call My Name" but I'm deferring judgement till I've heard the track in its entirety and in good quality.

of course, 'untitled' is a prince homage and d'angelo never tried to hide it. i don't understand all the fuss about that. it's a fantastic song imo! and i have to agree with funkbaby on this one, d'angelo HAS influenced prince. though prince's influence on d'angelo has been greater, he HAS been influenced by d'angelo too. prince has tried to follow the neo-soul trend (a.o. remember 'u make my sun shine' w/ angie stone) which was arguably started by d'angelo (and 'brown sugar' is NOT a prince album). besides that, 'voodoo'---definitely no neo-soul record---was most definitely an inspiration for prince (for 'rave', but also for stuff on TRC; just listen too 'muse 2 the pharaoh'). so, don't try to kid yourself with this image that paisley park is a creative autarky. prince DOES take from others. nothing wrong with that.

My point was about devotion. Lyrically and musically, "Call My Name" doesn't seem reminiscent of D'angelo, to me. Wasn't talking so much about D's marital status, as much as I was about a serious song of devotion in the vein of an old-school slow jam. Sorry for the baffle. smile

Don't over analyze things people. some will never be happy because they are fan of the 80s prince and want only that sound. If you listen carefully the song just sounds like ... "Prince".

I personally really liked and I am looking forward to the album!!!
