today I'm having an ATWIAD kind of day and... Things I'd like to know about this album that I have wondered for years but never thought to ask:
1. that break in Pop Life - what is that exactly? I used to think it sounded like ice hockey when I was a kid, now I have no idea at all, is it a riot? 2. Tamborine - sounds like he's singing "trampoline" in the chorus. Is he really? 3. The Ladder - when the song started today in the car I could've sworn it was Jill Jones "Baby your're a trip" - must've been from the same time? Thanx!

The Pop Life break is a stock recording of an old time boxing event. Ding, ."throw the bum out". It appears the strings on The Ladder were W&L's doing. Notice how they are plaintive as the ones on the Purple Rain coda? Oh my, oh my.

Actually, I thought the "Pop Life" recording contained a backwards recording of the crowd booing Prince when he opened for the Stones. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
Props will be withheld until the showing and proving has commenced. -- Aaron McGruder

The string arrangement that segues from Pop Life to The Ladder was written by Wendy and Lisa for an unreleased track possibly entitled "Our Destiny" or "Roadhouse Garden".

Actually I didn't mean the string section bit, but where the drum machine starts - same sequence on The Ladder as JJs song (the actual last song on the album, not the intro).

Are you talking about Jill Jones' "Baby You're a Trip"? Because all those string arrangements on her record were done by Clare Fischer.

Are none of you actually processing his question? I understand exactly what he means and it came into view perfectly as he has explained it. What's up y'all...where's the breakdown in communication? Yes, I agree, the beginning does sound reminiscent of each other

supaaaaa!!!! no, he's saying "troubling". No, no. The man say's 'Dansa, U need to clean out your ears girl, ding ding' I like to imagine the end of 'Temptation' as a kind of cartoon strip...God with his big hand damning Prince for his sexual sins and lil' Prince on his knees with tears coming from his eyes crying, NOOOOO!!! like he does. If someone drew my image I think it would be kinda cute!

Peace, Serveitupfrankie* Sorry. Bit of a hangover this morning. My comment was totally incongruous. I guess you could say the intro's sound the same, but that is basically true of all the rhythm tracks of that era - it's all the LinnDrum sounds that make everything sound similar. However, the basic tracks of "Baby.." were recorded way before "The Ladder". "Baby..." was done in 1982 and "The Ladder" was tracked in 1984.
