I probably like Prince more now than I ever have. I love that he does exactly whatever he wants to. But why not revisit the original MPLS sound if you are gonna revisit anything?

just listen to the star 69 outro(Common), and u 2 would be sayin' "why not revisit the sound of 1983?". I personally would love to see that happen, but obviously its unlikely. I think it would be a smart move though.

Hardly!!!, i don't hear an updated version of the Minneapolis sound anywhere on Rave. As far as i'm concerned he's never tried it (except maybe on Judas Kiss). Might be something he could attempt. It would certainly be braver than this JB tribute mode he's in at the moment.

So are the 60's and 70's! somebody tell Prince!

(I must point out, i'm not entirely serious. The Leno performance was cool as hell) The actual 1m 30s sample i've heard of Musicology doesn't do much for me though.

Yeah, I was feelin' the Leno performance big time. I think that Prince would rather revisit something truly old school rather than revisit his 80's stuff. He feels more of a challenge doing that. There's certainly no challenge musically in him doing something he's already done.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the Leno performance I and I dig Musicology with all my heart. However, I know Prince can throw back to the 60's and 70's. Why not throwback to the the MPLS sound of the early 80's? If we are revisiting sounds and bringing them into the 21st century why not?

Because the old MPLS sound is CHEESY in 2004! It was trendsetting in 1981-84, but in 2004 it is only a document of an era, and a memory for those who were there!

The "James Brown" sound is timeless! Put on ANY JB album from 1968-75, and put on "The Time", or "1999"---which sounds better in 2004? JB, Skywalker!

NOW, consider THIS, "Skywalker": Prince may be able to reproduce the SOUND of 1982, but he can't match the SONGWRITING anymore: it would sound like MOULDY, BAD IMITATION TRIBUTE-BAND PRINCE! The problem is he can't do GOOD James Brown. But he can't match OLD PRINCE either. eek

Any Prince @ this point is bonus. "Search your feelings, you know it to be true, Skywalker!" razz

"Musicology" seems rather stale for a Prince tune. No surprises, no quirkiness. If he's gonna jam, I want him to go for it like the extended version of "I Wanna Be your Lover" or "Just as Long as We're Together"

I disagree. What's old is new again and that 1982 sound has crept back into pop music. Did you hear "it's my life" by No Doubt? Any of Pink's new songs? I could name several hip hop acts who are using that cheesy 1982 synth sound.

Because Prince has already done the MPLS sound of the 80s, and done it to a level that he could never repeat again, at least not in our eyes. He's giving props to a different, earlier period, which personally I find much more interesting.

I don't particularly like to see artists back-track at all, but I fail to see how (like you say) revisiting James Brown of the 70s is in any way artistic development.

It's tedious.

That wasn't really a return to any old sound, other than songs that were supposed to be poppy and catchy.

I don't want Prince to back track at all. Why do people want to hear the same Prince they heard in 1983?
