Was just checking out a boot from Ghent '95 and an aftershow... I had never seen any gigs from this tour until now. I might be way late to the party, but man, were they killing. I like this "angry Prince" period -- perilous weight loss, "Slave" on his face, ultra-heavy eye makeup -- he took all of his frustrations out on the music and onstage. The set is basically a giant pussy, his bass player sits down, his keyboard player wears a dress... and they rock arenas in Europe! Yeah! Can you smell it?

Musicwise, I really liked that time. He was looking a little too much like Liza Manelli for my taste tho

95 gold era -

It's a great example of why Prince must be seen live to get the full picture... tunes like "Loose" and "Days of Wild" don't really make it for me on record. But when you hear them performed live with this line-up, it's like earth-shattering funk/rock of the highest order. I saw this band at Glam Slam in LA in '94 and it was awesome -- WAY outside of what folks were listening to on the radio at the time, which made it even better...

I think that by '95 was really overdoing it with the samples in his live shows. The music sounded better in '94. It was like the more time that passed, the more he messed around with the arrangements - to the point where samples almost ruined the live sound. By the time the Gold tour hit Japan in early '96, everything sounded pre-recorded.

The Come/Gold era concerts are my favorites. The B' Day shows in 94 and 95 in South Beach were crazy.

Hearing Prince rip out Endorphine Machine, Interactive etc, in a club was amazing. The music during that time had a totally different energy. The band was tight. They were even playing Exodus stuff. Sonny T was the shit.

I know that we will never see Prince like that ever again.

Yeah, his live shows during that era were certainly powerful. It was like the Dirty Mind era all over again. Maybe one day he will once again be that hard- blistering guitar, pounding drums, and drity bass!

Not that I don't love his live sound now.....

i have a video from a london 'gold' show. incredibly tight performances! definitely a period i wish i could have seen. at the time, though, i don't remember too many philadelphia area performances...or US performances, really. he played new york a few times, right? all i know is i love that live era!

I was at one of the Wembley shows for the Gold tour and although the music was great, i thought the "performance" was a bit cheesy.

What with the blow-up genitals, Prince's tiny conveyor belt and stuff.

But he did a wonderful performance of A case of U / I love u in me - just him and the guitar (okay and a bit more towards the end of i love u in me). And that was simply stunning.
