if he were to sign with them again and, through intelligent negotiations, gain his catalog ownership than one thing has nothing to do with another. now, if he signs just to sell a record...well, that would justify everything warners did.

I mean what if he makes a deal with warner brothers to distribute his new album that also regains his rights to the masters of his back catalog. Perhaps also having warner bros release remastered versions of his back catalog.

It never had the meaning he attributed to it, in the first place. Prince signed some fairly lucrative contracts with Warner Bros. He benefited from them, then cried to the press about them. It's up to him to negotiate a future contract with this in mind. I'll be eager to see the outcome. If he ends up doing the same thing YET AGAIN, I hope folks will be able to call a spade a spade.

Hopefully,if he does re-sign with Warners,he won't make the same mistake he made last time (sign a lucrative contract, then go to war with them when it doesn't work out the way he intended).

I wouldn't consider 100 million dollar and "the biggest contract in the industry" (in those days) "fairly" lucrative.

Yes it does, THAT would be true emancipation... for his "children", not for himself. The question then is how he will treat his children...

now, if he signs just to sell a record...well, that would justify everything warners did.

No it wouldn't.

Prince was given unbelievable creative freedom with his work, and was paid extremely well for his accomplishments.

The "war" against them was basically just a case of a completely spoiled man crying when things couldn't totally go his way.

In my view Prince needs to agree on a reasonable exclusive distribution deal (5-10 years, worldwide) for uncensored remasters in which deal the copyrights in the remasters belong to Prince. In order for the deal to stay reasonable for both parties and Prince owning the remasters he needs to lay down the crack pipe and stop demanding enormous advances and/or royalties and expecting that all major labels will carry his latest album.

Prince and WB and/or the other label need to figure out together THE right way to re-issue his classics remastered. Therefore he has to give the fan and the average consumer something extra that makes it wortwhile buying, like extra added outtakes and live performances. Can you picture this? Controversy remastered with a bonus disc live in New Orleans, crispy clean sound. SOTT with one bonus disc of outtakes and one a compilation of the SOTT tour.. etc.. etc...

You're presuming it had a meaning in the first place.

Okay, first off, Prince's main beef with Warner's was over the ownership of his masters. Now, you must understand that ALL the folks P was fueding with at the time are NO LONGER WORKING FOR WB. If the new WB regime negotiated a deal that gave him ownership of his masters, as well as the ability to do more experimental work outside of his deal with them, then he'd probably sign with them. Essentially, it would be like two fueding parties coming to a resolution. This doesn't invalidate either side's part in the fued, but rather it shows that they both have come to a compromise to settle the dispute.
