I didn't particularly like the ladder very much when I first listened to ATWIAD...it grew on me very quickly though.

Great song. thumbs up!

I love the song but the version you refer to at the end of the documentary is much better than the ATWIAD version. Anybody hear the song performed live?

I don't know what you guys are talking about, the ladder is a weak Prince song. One of his weakest off any album. Sometimes he would just toss off songs and you could tell that he put little revision or thought into them. Not that that's always been bad, some of my favorite Prince songs are tunes that he cranked out for b sides like she always in my hair and even hello which are just as quirky as anything he's ever done. But the ladder is a weak Purple Rain revamp I heard the live version and I always love it when Prince does Ray Charles.

The Ladder was considered too over the top when it came out, but it has aged well. It was an awfully preachy song for a pop star -- many critics singled the song as a example of what wasn't so great about ATWIAD. I especially love the beginning, which sometimes suddenly pops in my head --- "Once upon a time in the land of sinaplenty" It works very well as a narrative, though sonically it has some strident spots that can get on my nerves.

The Ladder is imho an amazing Prince tune..
to hear it live at Manchester ONA was not only amazing it also made me feel humble to be a Prince fan.
An absolute treat if u ask me..... woot!
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

Almost as interesting to hear as the horn played by Eddie M on the 12" version of 'I Would Die 4 U" released 4 months earlier?

"The Ladder'' was not one of my favorite Prince songs, but I was really diggin' the snippet version I heard on that documentary. Very soulful and just smoother than the ATWIAD version.

musically it sounds like a Purple Rain re-tread.

That being said - I love it smile It's always been a fave from that time period. Great harmony vocals especially by Wendy and Lisa
