Prince praises Robert Randolph In todays MPLS Star/Tribune article on Robert Randolph and the Family Band, it talks about their great performance at the Grammys and how Prince gave Robert some heavy praise after the show.
Robert says, "He told me I was the best guitar player he has ever seen, which just floored me." Pretty amazing praise indeed. | |

i love hearin prince drop praise on a deserving artist! robert randolph was one of the highlights of the austin city limit fest last year. theres no stoppin his live performance. him and ben harper went head to head, side by side and tore it up! | |

I wish I could say the same about his studio work, and his lack of variety kicks in after about 3 songs...

yes that was. you know, the sly wanna be band. sat where sly would sit. had the same stage setup. family band, family stone. very good performance, and no doubt plays that instrument very, VERY well but lacking in the originality dept. ala most artists these days. everyone has influences but take it to another level, don't be just taking from your elders  | |

Everybody on this board who has seen Prince live since the ONA tour knows he can tear it up. Besides he gave Robert Randolph props. What else do you want. | |

Well said, I thought the band was funky as hell, stole the show but pretty much plagiarized Sly and The Family Stone. I don't know much about guitar playing or of the particular kind that he was playing but i was amazed that he played all that lead guitar and sang and even danced at the keyboard which is a rarity. I play piano and I'm thinking of working some stuff like that into my thing. It's not easy to do anything other than sit when that is your instrument. As far as originality goes, I'm with you, I say they shouldn't steal everything which they obviously did, from the shifting vocals and their respective ranges to the ripoff chorus and even the name. I'm all for homage but it has to be done with discrimination, respect and taste. | |

he wants Prince to somehow "humble" himself and admit he's a "fake" musician, (since he obvously believes that's what Prince is)  The Org is the short yellow bus of the Prince Internet fan community. | |

Though I totally dig the idea of funkin' with a lapsteel, his performance wasn't all that.

I highly, highly recommend anyone to pick up that CD. It is wonderful and Robert Randolph is an extraordianry musician. I was blessed to have met him recently and he is a genuine person and a very intelligent individual. Very fan friendly and a beautiful soul.

Sorry to interfere with your idolworship. I wasn't EXPECTING anything. What I got was a performance with a guitar solo that KICKED Prince's ASS! Robert got less stage time than Prince did and still kicked his ass. I think Prince, like many others watching, found it refreshing to hear some cats who could PLAY. | |

can`t speak for Randolph`s performance as i live in the UK and only saw the Prince 5min.
as regards ANYONE kicking Prince`s ass-go back and watch Computer Blue live at 1st Avenue 1983.if that doesn`t merit cannonisation i don`t know what does.St Prince,patron saint of the guitar.(lol) "Prince don't hear Ravel when he wanna make love to his woman.
