Prince hooking up with a major label is not a panacea. Promotion-wise, it'd certainly help.

Artistically, well alot of people don't seem to remember that he was both willing and able to put out crap music that didn't sell when he was with WB the first go round (Where is Tony M. anyway?).

When he was with WB, he had at least one top 10 single for something like 16 straight years. Since he left WB, he has had zero. He didn't stop having top 10 singles until he started sabotaging WB's promotion. He got terrible advice from Clive in reworking Rave - the original track list would have made a stronger album than what ultimately got released. I say get him back to WB, remaster his old albums, and use the potential sales of the whole catalog as incentive to do the promotion it'll take to get him back on the charts. The response to his Grammy performance clearly shows he can be commercially viable again. Kurt Loder, of all people, said it best:

But Prince himself is a house afire whenever he steps onto a stage — no help needed, thanks — and we really must see more of him. Much more. Will somebody please do something about this?

---
Prince has had zero hits since he left WB because he has not had the capital to market his music. Record companines spend thousands of dollars paying radio stations to play songs, making videos, and doing in-store promotions. Did anyone on this board think that Prince had that kind of capital.

You need a major record label for the promotional dollars. I don't think he was wrong to leave WB because the label was in a shambles. It was sold for a reason.

If he can get back with a major label that promotes his music and get his masters back he would be a fool not to grab the opportunity. He is not getting any younger and this could be a great way retire gracefully. Going out on top is always the best.

He had/has that kind of capital...
What do you think it costs to record about 75+ music video's for his own pleasure...
He could have easily put all that $ in promoting himself and his material, but instead he throws it away on "bling bling" and vanity projects...
Not to mention the $ he got from various tours for which he asked ridiculous amounts of cash...

Pulled from hitsdailydouble.com:

THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS LABEL-LESS: Prince is back and looking for a new label home. The superstar, who received raves for his Purple Rain duet with Beyonce on the Grammys and then his midnight concert at L.A.'s House of Blues after the Awards ceremony, has been talking to a number of record companies after several years as an indie. The Purple One, inked last year to Universal Music Publishing, will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 15 in New York. His long-time attorney, Londell McMillan, will handle the negotiations, with Clive Davis' J/RCA and Bruce Lundvall's Blue Note the early front-runners to get the Symbol's signature on the dotted line. I Think,It's Only My Opion,That Prince As An Independent Label(NPG Records),(Pasiley Park)Was A Good Move.He Let Us Inside His Mind And Traeted Us With Uncontrolled Good Music Of All Bases Coverd.Very Creative And Outstanding Artist And Performer.I Can't Wait To See Him Get Inducted In Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.He Has Done Alot For Music,More Than We Relazie And Will In Years To Come. The Good Thing About Siging With A Record Label Is That All Fams Will Be Running To Stores To Buy His Music Before It Sells Out,And Posters In Store's Will Let Everyone Know Prince Is Back,Just One Thing Cousin He Never Left O+> It's In The Words I Said It,Those Who Don't Know It F**K All Ya'll,Peace O+>O+>

The Blue Note signing would make perfect sense if the rumor of a tour with Norah Jones was somewhat true. Just a thought...

If he signs a deal, then that is good news as far as I'm concerned. But it's only step 1.

well, I completely agree with that. But I think Prince realizes if he's ever going to return to commercial viability, this is the year. He showed the seriousness he places in that goal by first opening the grammys, then doing a performance that would maximize the buzz the next day, not so much from us hard core fans, but from the people who were fans of Prince in the past.

I think his laying low for the last 18 months also shows his seriousness of reemerging this year. I just hope when new music does come out, he doesn't have a ballad as the leadoff single. It's time for him to get out there and kick peoples butts again.

To answer another poster - I think Prince has the money needed to do it on his own, but if nothing else, his post Warners years have shown Prince as unwilling to put money at risk - something the major labels do all of the time.

Hey it is Prince's Journey .. so who cares:)

Prince has made MORE money from 1996-2004 then he did on his whole Warners Bros Contract! ( he said in 1996-1997 alone he made more)

sooo If Prince wants to get a "Big Boy" push god bless him! He knows he can always go back to his NPGMC and make nice bank! smile

I mean look at his record sales.. when he does it on his own he grosses 100,000 -120,000 sales ( when he went with Arista he had 200,000+) THEN when he left them and went back on his own his sales 25,000 more record sales.

The guy is loaded!! He just is doing the right thing and getting a huge push. I mean he owns from his NPGMC Years a Home in Canada,Spain,Hawaii & of course Paisley Park.

NOW he is just reminding everyone he is GOD of Popular Music with actual real musical skills!

Prince if you do ALL Guitar Music/Rock you will be a POP Music God!

KEEP all that R&B slow boring crap for the true fans like us or some NPGMC releases...

The Mainstream is White & LOVE Jimmi.. you are clearly (better in my eyes) BUT even worse AS GOOD as him on the Guitar.

Do Guitar "Lets Go Crazy" type songs.. anything with long amazing solos!

* You will get A+ reviews from everyone in the press just like you did for your Grammy Performance.

As admirable as it was to see Prince as an Indy artist treat us to fearless creativity and diversity in his music, I really will adore seeing him signed to a label again.

Frankly, a musical legend must be appreciated by more ppl than just a cult following of diehard fans.

Prince foresaked his entire public profile, hits and high selling albums when he spoke out against WB.

Breathtaking albums like TGE got almost completely ignored all because the man chose artistic integrity at the absolute total expense of good business choices. That is just sad to me.

So, with Prince coming back to major label status, name intact and all, this gives the man the chance to show a broader audience of uneducated music fans what a true musical legend is truly capable of.

With everything that his heart, mind and soul has given us in the form of his music, he deserves that.

I agree with DavidEye, I am so excited about this. I didn't get to watch the grammy performance being in London but I have just enjoyed it (minus sound - sad) in my office this morning thanks to CokeJohnson's posting.

The man rocks and I can't wait until he comes out of his shell again. Go P! woot!

What is independant? is it siging with a little company or the enjoying the pleasures of total creative freedom? If prince signs again it means he will have this control. Anyway Bluenote is not really a big major label...

Artistically or commercially?

Commercially...
I hope not artistically but if he's signing with a major then that means "art" will have to make way for "hit" potential music i.e. whatever is hip now and is easy to sell to the average teenager who is conditioned by crap that's played on MTV and the likes... But they won't buy it just like they didn't buy it with "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic"

I just hope that a new major album will have a similar sound as TRC, no plastic RAVE sound.
