I don't post too often but damm, prince is so over. If he had come out w/ musicology alright. but, purple rain? from a guy who repeatedly said on his last tour, if u have come to get ur purple rain on, ur in the wrong house? I know that it is the anniversary of the movie but, if prince wanted to seriously be seen as a true contempory artist in 2004, playing a greatest hits melody with Beyonce is not the way to do it.
It was a good performance, and not great, Beyonce was all over the place, P was tight considering he usually chokes on tv(insert any leno performance here). But i seriously wanted him to perform something new, at least "everywhere" w/ Beyonce and a choir would have been a good choice in these troubled times...? no one except prince fans have heard rainbow children anyway. Well, I guess if he is lucky a few younguns will pick up his older stuff cuz they havent heard good songs in a while and will b intrigued, but damm, either he should perform new material or retire to the greatest hits act. Havent u ever felt like p has no faith in his new material? everytime he gets on tv, he always falls back to his hits. I remember the party on mtv or vh1? for emancipation, he friggin played purple rain there too! I really love the dude but I have lost faith we will ever see him in mainstream media as nothing but a 80's oldies popstar. And it is a damm shame, cuz he looks every bit as young as he did twenty years ago and can play his ass off too. he is and always will be a guilty pleasure for us who follow the real prince, the one that exists today with current material. I am sure he had little opinion on what was to take place if he wanted to open that show. and that sucks. Cuz it could have been something truly special.

Realistically, if he had come with Musicology then he wouldn't have opened the show.

Shows how little the people here on the Org actually knows about the music business. Had he done something new no one besides us fans would have cared. Vegas lounge act?? That's my nomination for the STUPIDIST comment this year.Prince came on and reminded the masses what made/makes him a LEGEND and if that's too hard for some folk to understand then it's because they want what they want only.
PRINCE FUCKING ROCKED THE JOINT TONIGHT!!!

PRINCE FUCKING ROCKED THE JOINT TONIGHT!!! I am so with you on this!! Just take at look at the crowds reaction! He did remind the masses of his status, for Byonce to be up the singing his somgs when she in her own right is nominated for a truck load I think that is truly sayin' something!!! In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

The performance was a little over-produced for my taste, but, that almost always happens with what was essentially a one-off TV performance. When Prince has a chance to strectch out so to speak, like he did on Arsenio and Vibe, then he can really let loose. But when you have time constraints and such, a one-off TV performance is always going to run the risk of being over produced.
In my opinion, there is one reason and one reason only for the Purple Rain material and that is because of the 20 year anniversary of the film. Now, with that being said, unfortunately for many non-fans watching the show, they are still left with the sense that "Prince hasn't done anything since Purple Rain" and to come out performing Purple Rain may have come off like Purple Rain is the only thing Prince has to offer. I can see why some fans may have been left feeling dissappointed. But as a die-hard fan, I think that a true fan should know better than to think that Prince is now officially a Vegas lounge act... especially if you're basing that line of thinking on one little tiny TV performance. To come to such a conclusion based on the circumstances is ridiculous. "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"

he did a helluva lot better than some of the cats who were on there. be thankful, cuz we all could've been treated to some fuckin punk-pop band opening the ceremonies instead, had he not played.

PRINCE FUCKING ROCKED THE JOINT TONIGHT!!! I agree. This could be the best carrer decision he's made since... Well, since long before I've been a fan of him. Not the best performance he ever did (I liked it quite a bit though), but since he clearly wants his music to reach a wider audience once again, it was a smart one. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

Why does eveyone seem so surprised to see him playing purple rain at the grammies rather than doing something new ?
I mean, he always had and still has a very ambiguous relationship with his pop star status. Let's face it: this gemini thing is exactly what makes him so interesting to most of us!!! Let's take this performance for what it is: a cool reminder to 99% of people that he is alive and kicking. This will never prevent huim from playing 15mn instrumentals in clubs and making groundbreaking music if he wants (and is able) to... So WHERE IS YOUR PROBLEM ??? As always, those who trust prince as a person are always the most disapointed... I personnally only care about his music, otherwise I think he's mostly an asshole, so I'm never disapointed! That performance was cool, that's the word. Won't listen to it in 10 years time obviously, but it was fun.

Prince ain't no Vegas act, I don't know what boat you fell off of, but we, the fans, didn't want to hear none of the new stuff from NEWS or anything that came in out these last few years. The reason he performed Purple Rain is because this year is the 20th anniversary and I would rather hear the old over the new. Another thing, Prince just came to his senses, people want to hear the familiar stuff and he can mix the new in with it, but I don't want to hear strickly new stuff that not even I'm not familiar with.

Don't let the smooth taste fool ya...Prince will be fighting for Marque' space beside Celine Dion on the VEGAS strip sooner than you can say "OOOWWW WAAAAA!"

Frankly, I'd love for him to become a Vegas act.
I live very close to LV and I'd go see him all the time. He'd have to play regularly, so more folks would get to see him and he'd make good money. Hopefully he'd use it to make what he wants and release it to "us". Let the masses have the Vegas act. I'm firmly planted in denial

PRINCE FUCKING ROCKED THE JOINT TONIGHT!!! You are so on the money when you say how little the people here on the org actually know about the music business. No one gets to go on the grammys & perform a new song. They aren't given that choice. The grammys are not a venue for pushing new product. It is for promoting the work that was done in the past year(s). Prince was able to perform because it was the anniversary of PR. That was his hook to get on the show. Musicology was never an option for Prince on the Grammys. Stop acting like it was a huge error on his part. He could perform PR or nothing.

I was just disappointed he choose that set list. It was like a novelty, cause know one had seen him in a very long time. Liked it freaked everyone out.
Wish he did something "bolder" like Get Off or DMSR. It was very Las Vegas with the suit and him doing the whole James Brown thing now since he's older. He's more talented than this. Where is the innovativeness he use to show??

I agree that he seems to go back to his 80s hits an awful lot. Sure that is what most people want to hear, but it is very "Vegas" in that respect.
But I guess unless he plays a club show for the best fans, then most people who come to see him play (and support him financially that way) want to hear the hits and most all the hits were from the 80s. So he gives them what they want even though it is a lame thing to do artistically. I think we all agree that Prince's best days of songwriting are way behind him. He still may write a few more great songs, but they are sure going to be few and far between at this point. I think he has gotten other interests besides music and songwriting now, and he will continue to do it more to make money than because his heart is totally into it. There's nothing wrong with that and he had an incredible run, but I just see him running out of gas, creatively.
