When Doves Cry, The Glamorous Life, etc. melodies I never consciously noted that these songs (WDC & TGL) main verse melody are the same as the chorus melody until someone actually pointed out to me that the melodies don't really change. Yet the listener is ultra aware when the sections of the song change.
You could probably debate that even those melodies do have points that alter from the main "riff" or idea, but for the most part, it's the same shit. Can anyone recall any other `80s Prince-penned hits where this occurs?

So, y'all can't think of another instance where the verse melody is the same as the chorus melody?

'erotic city' , glamorous life actually got a bridge. erotic city is... now i think of it; boring! but even then, i love it!

yeah i know these songs might have other sections, but even verse melodies are usually different from the main hook chorus melody.
i really think the bridge makes "glamorous life" a hit. "17 days" I think is another example of recycled verse/chorus melody. "been gone, 17 days, 17 long nights" "(so let the rain) come down, (let the) rain come down, (let the) rain come down down"

Not 80's
but The Most beautiful Girl is the most obvious verse/chorus same melody song.

TMBGITW is still a pretty good example.
Keep brainstorming...

It just dawned on me that "A Love Bizarre" does this too. One of my favorite Prince songs!!! Same fucken melody for the verse, chorus, and there isn't even a bridge.
The moon up above, it shines on upon our skin. Whispering words that scream of outrangeous sin. We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. It gets kinda rough in the back of our limousine. That's what we are we all want a love bizarre. That's what we are we all want a love bizarre. A strawberry mind, a body that's built for two. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do. Swallow the pride and joy of the ivory tower. We'll dance on the roof, make love on a bed of flowers. That's what we are we all want a love bizarre...

Does it matter?
Who says these songs should be so "structured"? Simplicity is good. Simplicity works .

Can anyone recall any other `80s Prince-penned hits where this occurs? Must be why mum used to always complain about these songs not having "melody" (ie. standard song structure). She told me that "pop stars these days (and this was back in 1984) don't write songs like they used to" - well yeah, pure genius, I thought, not according to formula. That's what makes these songs so different - although Prince has certainly developed his own formulas.
