Manic Monday and 1999

Has anyone else noticed that these two Prince songs have the exact same melody in the verses?

"Six o'clock already, I was just in the middle of a dream..."

"I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray..."

is this just Prince recycling his work?

It's been noticed and remarked upon a number of times over the years.

Prince has even stated that he "stole from himself" for that song. He did it because everyone said the 1999 hook synth hook sounded like The Mama's & The Papa's "Monday, Monday"
So..."manic monday". And it was perfect since The Bangles had that Mama's & Papa's vibe/harmony so he gave it to them...

He got the meolody of 1999 from Monday Monday and as a joke did Manic Monday ina tribute triumverate to the sixties pop music he so enjoys (which is why he creates Take Me With U's, Raspberry Berets etc) and gave it to The Bangles who were then before the real big time, on some sixties type era music melody vibe.

There was something about Phil Collins lifting the melody of Sussudio from 1999.

Google gave me:

'”Sussudio” seems to borrow the synth backing from "1999" by Prince (it doesn’t actually – they just sound terribly similar)'

and from http://www.twronline.net/...story2.htm:

'the single "Sussudio". A big ebullient tune with a rhythm reminiscent of (although not copied as some critics maintained) of Prince's "1999" record.'

I think Per Nilsen mentioned this in DMSR.
