Today I am on a musical HIGH.

Yesterday, while browsing through 15 years worth of putting things in boxes, I started rummaging through the boxes that are still at my mum's place.

What a fun. My missing box sets of James Brown and Aretha Franklin, a NPG tamborine, three boxes worth of Prince pictures and articles.

Loads of mementos, among them; my first ever bootleg tapes. They were still playable. The best find though, is the boot of Joy In Repetition, with the original intro.

Oh my...

Whatever possessed Prince to mix that intro out of another song?

I found myself transfering the song from tape to Mini Disc and then boosting up the sound. I have seen LOADS of boots with the song, but always it is segued/mixed out of another song; always that party talk shit that messes up a genius intro.

Remember; that lone computer beat, echo-ing. Then 9 seconds of silence. Then the second beat, also echo-ing, but before the echo is through the beat picks up speed and becomes the beat as we know it.

Just describing it gives me goosebumps. I now have to play it again, after I already did for about 20 times yesterday evening and this morning.

I prefer this boot to the original released version, shabby sound quality included.

I even wrote an article about this song, that turned into an open letter to the little man.
I'ld post it if I thought he would ever see it. It's all about colors. It's about music being addictive. It's about the soundtrack of my soul. About how colors and hues blend into one. He'ld like that, I am sure.
But the water has stopped flowing, at least the recycled Vault water. It will never flow naturally. It will be tampered with, cutting off the music supple that has us so addicted still.
Hehehe, already raving I am. I am not forgetting about the water that flows from the spring in the present. It's still able to burn itself into my soul, like the song One Nite Alone did.



I will now play that intro again.
And again.

Cuz soul just never stops. a few months ago I posted that I love the original demo much more than the released version ...

I got a few reactions, saying that there's no differce between them ... solely the sound-quality ...

You are not alone, I stopped my car in the nearest parking lot when I finnaly got the One Night Alone cd. I picked it up from the PO and was on my way to class. I just sat there and was really blown away. Your Gonna C Me was next and I got pretty misty eyed.That album sounds so sincere, I really think its honest and real. I know exactly how you feel. The first thing I do when I get bad or good news is get to listening, to mark the feeling, and to have a reference. I decided not to go to class and went home to listen to the whole thing.

The tape it was on is SO funny. Incomplete versions of Databank and Heaven is segued straight on the outro of JIR. It took me some time to edit it, especially the intro, as that is also segued out of another song.



But SO glad I did it. Just like editing the intro of 777-9311 on my personalised The Time Greatest Hits.

I love the original intro to Joy In Repetition.
The slow build of the song as the drumbeat gradually
builds upon itself... wonderful.

I actually liked the way Prince segued it out of 'The Ball'
on the original Crystal Ball album, that worked very well too.
But I never liked the way it segued out of 'We Can Funk' on
Graffiti Bridge. That came close to ruining the song for me.

It made the entire Graffity Bridge experience a bit of a let down; it was my first ever encounter with Prince's edit antics.

One of my all-time favourite Prince songs; I've only heard a snippet of the original on 'The Work' box-set, after 'The Ball'.

If anyone can help me out...

This is THE definitive version for me...The GB version does ruin it. I remember having it on vinyl a couple of years before it was officially released. I have been searching for this in ex quality for years but no one seems to have have it on the newer bootz. I think it was called The Royal Box on Blue Lake Records...

It's a great shame that there don't appear to be any really
decent copies of Joy In Repetition with the intro intact.
I've only heard versions that range between "OK"-"dire".

i was making love this one time in band camp and i moved my hips to the exact rhythm of the intro.the pillow loooved it!

on a less silly note,yes,!!i remember when i first got the "crystal ball" cassette in the mail about 10 yeatrs ago!!I tore open the box and played everything.still a great cassette!!when i heard that intro iw as in heaven!!this was sooo Prince it's ridiculous!!

Speaking of Joy in Rep, my favorite song right now is the Joy in Rep version on the "One Nite Alone Live!" aftershow cd. 11 mins of pure bliss with 2 AWESOME extended guitar jams. Unreal!

Lifted it off a 15 year old tape and transfered it onto MiniDisc. Then boosted up the sound and re-instated the first beat that got cut off as the person who put it on tape wanted to mix it out off another song.

But I must admit, the bad sound quality makes it even more 'impressive', somehow.
